Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 hands on photos and full specifications

xiaomi redmi note 2

UPDATE: We have contacted Xiaomi and they confirm the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 does have a Micro SD card with support for 32GB cards. Battery size is 3060mAh and the lowest screen brightness is 1cd/m². It seems there were a few errors when a few of the images were translated.

The Xioami Redmi Note 2 was unveiled today and what a surprising phone it has turned out to be! To follow on from our launch coverage today, here are some real photos of Xiaomi’s latest (and greatest?).

Take one look at the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 and the phone is unmistakably a Xiaomi phone. With a 5.5-inch display the screen real estate is the same as the original Xiaomi Redmi Note, but now the physical footprint of  152 x 76 x 8.25mm the phone is smaller making for a more comfortable device, and the resolution has been bumped up to FHD 1920 x 1080.

xiaomi redmi note 2 specifications

The display has the same sunlight mode as the Xiaomi Mi4i for better viewing in direct sunlight and at the opposite end of the spectrum the screen can be dimmed to as low as 0.5cd/m² 1cd/m² making the Redmi Note 2 a perfect companion for bedtime reading.

Above the display is 5 mega-pixel Omnivision sensor and as usual all the usual MIUI beauty features are available to soften your skin and edit the photos as you like.

The rear camera is a little more special. The sensor itself is a Samsung CMOS 13 mega-pixel shooter with F2.2 aperture, those specs are the norm for phones of this price these days, but what really stands out is the inclusion of PDAF (Phase Detection Auto Focus) for fast focussing speeds of only 0.1 seconds. A 5 element lens stack helps to keep images distoration free and colours looking as natural as possible.

Also on the outside of the Redmi Note 2 is an infrared remote control. Xiaomi have also included the feature on their flagship Mi Note, and with it you can control your TV or other IR controlled devices.

xiaomi redmi note 2 specifications

Under the hood the hardware keeps on taking turns for the good. Xiaomi have opted for the powerful Mediatek Helio X10 chipset in the Redmi Note 2 running at 2.0Ghz in the base models and a faster 2.2Ghz in the top of the range Redmi Note. Helping the chipset out is 2GB RAM and there are 16GB and 32GB internal memory options plus space for a micro SD card (Update: this has been confirmed via email) if you need more space.

xiaomi redmi note 2 specifications

Dual SIM LTE is also part of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 appeal, just be sure to order the correct version of the phone for your carriers networks. The base 799 Yuan model only supports TD-LTE and TD-SCDMA, the 899 Yuan model FDD-LTE and TD-LTE, while the 999 Yuan Redmi Note 2 has the faster chip and more memory plus FDD-LTE and TD-LTE support.

On the battery front the 8.25mm phone has a 3060mAh battery that IS removable, plus quick-charge 2.0 is implemented also.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 will be available in green, blue, yellow, white and pink from 16th August in China. International buyers will need to wait for Xiaomi to launch the Redmi Note 2 outside of the mainland or alternatively wait for resellers to get stock of the phones.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 now listed on shop.gizchina.com, availability soon.

I held off buying the Elephone P7000 and was even considering the Vowney and Meizu M2 Note. But I always was waiting for the Redmi Note 2, hoping it would deliver with the MT6795 and it did, and to price it so low is Game Changing!

The problem with making your low end tier too good is it can end up cannibalizing sales of your higher end models. The Mi5 is really going to have to be something if they want to sell it for 2-3x the price of this.

Mi4 was nice but overpriced, mi note is really nice but overpriced, mi4i is not nice and overpriced for a snapdragon 61x.I wouldn’t dare to call this note 2 low end in comparison with the mi4i high end pfffff… This is way better and costs half price!

I know there have been tears about the mi4i but i have loved using it and i really like the design. No NFC. It seems it will be a must have with Android pay. Oneplus two neither has nfc.

    • August 13, 2015

@Andi, do you have any idea why most of current launched China phones lack NFC? Afaik, NFC adoption in the west is finally taking off. Also, i would expect fingerprint scanners because of support by Android M

      • Jason45
        August 13, 2015

It’s not massively used yet in China.

        • August 13, 2015

It’s not massively used in the west either, but this is chickenegg? If all phone makers leave it out, it ‘ll never be used ;-). If Chinese phone makers also want their phones to be used in the west, it might help keeping in NFC.

          • Jason45
            August 13, 2015

NFC chip does costs money, every penny counts I guess for low costs phones. Since most Chinese phones are not officially released outside China, they don’t have to considerate that. Just like the 4G band 20 story, a lot of Chinese phones usually don’t have it.

If NFC usage is becoming more popular, they have plenty of time to include it in next year’s model or a couple of years later.

          • balcobomber25
            August 13, 2015

It was included for years no one used it. Even today with Apple and Samsung, the majority of people are not using it. There was a report last week that the number of people using Apple Pay has dropped considerably. It is a gimmick feature most people will try out a few times and never go back to. Besides the fact that most countries have no use for NFC.

Won’t make a difference if Google continues its trend of limiting support for SD cards. It’s only a matter of time before Google abandons them completely and tries to push more people to it’s cloud services. Personally I switched to OTG a long time ago and have never looked back.

They won’t right now, but that doesn’t mean they won’t in the future. Especially with how much progress is being made with LTE networks around the world. Once every country has reasonable access (meaning not insanely expensive) to LTE you can kiss SD card support goodbye.

The ZF 2 is good, but not great. I had a ZF6 before.

I expected to see the UI going blazing fast with the 4G RAM, it does not. I don’t feel any difference with my ZF 6. You can open more apps, great! But who need to open 50 apps?

The camera is performing well only outdoor and under the sun. Otherwise the colours are weirds, too much yellow the shapes are pixelated.

And Asus screw up everybody with the ZF Selfies that clearly got better camera for less money.
Anyway: Don’t buy the Zenfone 2.

Even if you purchased Zenphone 2, Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 is still affordable to have another phone. One request to Xiaomi, please start your sales with
      a) Black/Grey version
      b) With options of both 16 and 32 GB

Black versions are more popular than white versions so please please when you at least send the phones to markets like India understand that Black phone is always preferred even over silver and gold coloured ones

No NFC. It seems it will be a must have with Android pay. Oneplus two neither has nfc.

    • Raoul Teeuwen
      August 13, 2015

@Andi, do you have any idea why most of current launched China phones lack NFC? Afaik, NFC adoption in the west is finally taking off. Also, i would expect fingerprint scanners because of support by Android M

    • Jason45
      August 13, 2015

It’s not massively used yet in China.

    • Raoul Teeuwen
      August 13, 2015

Besides the fact that most countries have no use for NFC.

maybe Helios X20 with provision for 200 GB(Sandisk) microsd card? :)..having said that even X10 is more than enough for my use.

      August 13, 2015

Won’t make a difference if Google continues its trend of limiting support for SD cards. It’s only a matter of time before Google abandons them completely and tries to push more people to it’s cloud services. Personally I switched to OTG a long time ago and have never looked back.

    • Dante

Sd 810 or the helio x20

      Expect it at MWC

    • balcobomber25
      August 13, 2015

They won’t right now, but that doesn’t mean they won’t in the future. Especially with how much progress is being made with LTE networks around the world. Once every country has reasonable access (meaning not insanely expensive) to LTE you can kiss SD card support goodbye.

also , is Quick Charge 2.0 explained in the release ceremony?

    • balcobomber25
      August 13, 2015

TD-LTE (or TDD) Stands for Time Division Long Term Evolution. FD (or FDD) is Frequency Division. The major difference between the two is the frequencies they use and how they use them. TD operates on higher bands with a higher frequency (38, 40, 41) But I won’t bore you with technical details.

Most Networks around the world operate on FD, TD is used mainly in Asia and Africa. Pakistan where you live operated on FD.
