UPDATE: We have contacted Xiaomi and they confirm the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 does have a Micro SD card with support for 32GB cards. Battery size is 3060mAh and the lowest screen brightness is 1cd/m². It seems there were a few errors when a few of the images were translated.
The Xioami Redmi Note 2 was unveiled today and what a surprising phone it has turned out to be! To follow on from our launch coverage today, here are some real photos of Xiaomi’s latest (and greatest?).
Take one look at the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 and the phone is unmistakably a Xiaomi phone. With a 5.5-inch display the screen real estate is the same as the original Xiaomi Redmi Note, but now the physical footprint of 152 x 76 x 8.25mm the phone is smaller making for a more comfortable device, and the resolution has been bumped up to FHD 1920 x 1080.
The display has the same sunlight mode as the Xiaomi Mi4i for better viewing in direct sunlight and at the opposite end of the spectrum the screen can be dimmed to as low as 0.5cd/m² 1cd/m² making the Redmi Note 2 a perfect companion for bedtime reading.
Above the display is 5 mega-pixel Omnivision sensor and as usual all the usual MIUI beauty features are available to soften your skin and edit the photos as you like.
The rear camera is a little more special. The sensor itself is a Samsung CMOS 13 mega-pixel shooter with F2.2 aperture, those specs are the norm for phones of this price these days, but what really stands out is the inclusion of PDAF (Phase Detection Auto Focus) for fast focussing speeds of only 0.1 seconds. A 5 element lens stack helps to keep images distoration free and colours looking as natural as possible.
Also on the outside of the Redmi Note 2 is an infrared remote control. Xiaomi have also included the feature on their flagship Mi Note, and with it you can control your TV or other IR controlled devices.
Under the hood the hardware keeps on taking turns for the good. Xiaomi have opted for the powerful Mediatek Helio X10 chipset in the Redmi Note 2 running at 2.0Ghz in the base models and a faster 2.2Ghz in the top of the range Redmi Note. Helping the chipset out is 2GB RAM and there are 16GB and 32GB internal memory options plus space for a micro SD card (Update: this has been confirmed via email) if you need more space.
Dual SIM LTE is also part of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 appeal, just be sure to order the correct version of the phone for your carriers networks. The base 799 Yuan model only supports TD-LTE and TD-SCDMA, the 899 Yuan model FDD-LTE and TD-LTE, while the 999 Yuan Redmi Note 2 has the faster chip and more memory plus FDD-LTE and TD-LTE support.
On the battery front the 8.25mm phone has a 3060mAh battery that IS removable, plus quick-charge 2.0 is implemented also.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 photos
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 will be available in green, blue, yellow, white and pink from 16th August in China. International buyers will need to wait for Xiaomi to launch the Redmi Note 2 outside of the mainland or alternatively wait for resellers to get stock of the phones.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 now listed on shop.gizchina.com, availability soon.
I held off buying the Elephone P7000 and was even considering the Vowney and Meizu M2 Note. But I always was waiting for the Redmi Note 2, hoping it would deliver with the MT6795 and it did, and to price it so low is Game Changing!
i held off buying be touch2
The problem with making your low end tier too good is it can end up cannibalizing sales of your higher end models. The Mi5 is really going to have to be something if they want to sell it for 2-3x the price of this.
If you don’t screw up your *higher end models it won’t be an issue.
Who can say to Redmi Note 2 is low end while considering Mi4i as high end?
Mi Note released with previous year’s flagship specs and its pricing was wrong.
They did right thing with Redmi Note 2 finally. If it cannibalizes Mi4i and Mi Note’s sales reason will be their mistakes with Mi4i and Mi Note.
Totally agree.
Mi4 was nice but overpriced, mi note is really nice but overpriced, mi4i is not nice and overpriced for a snapdragon 61x.I wouldn’t dare to call this note 2 low end in comparison with the mi4i high end pfffff… This is way better and costs half price!
I know there have been tears about the mi4i but i have loved using it and i really like the design. I always thought the mi4i that was made for India was trying to give people really good specs for a cheap price. But i have to say the Redmi note 2 looks excellent i will await the international version
My thoughts exactly.
I wonder, is it 2 sims + SD or 1 sim + SD/2 sims?
2 sims + Sd its confirmed
What is with LTE band 20? Because there should be an international version. How can we find out, if the international version will have LTE band 20?
Are u sure it comes with a memory card slot? Coz somewhere i read its not..
It’s not
PR says it does
The official site has no mention of an sd card
http://www.mi.com/note2/
emailed xiaomi for confirmation 😀
Requires permission, maybe post a screenshoit?
here you go
Thanks, that’s encouraging .
TENAA was listing miscoSD slot too but as you said they made mistakes in the PR material so i wonder if maybe they removed it at the last minute and they forgot to edit. If’s funny how many people need to first make sure that such a simple feature is there before considering a buy. It would be so much easier if they would stop being stupid and just include a slot in everything. In 2019 we’ll have 128GB-256GB of NAND in such phones but that doesn’t matter, we’ll still need microSD, at the very least for shooting 8k pics and vids.
Xiaomi have confirmed via email that the Redmi Note 2 has SD card support for up to 32GB SD cards.
Thanks for the kind reply andi… And thanks for clarifying
Indeed, it has a microsd card slot. See this pic for the back of this phone. You can see the microSD card slot very clearly next to the two simcards slots.

Thanks far that ,you should tell them to properly list it on their site too ,before users go mad lol. Seems they did a great job on this one. The design is a bit boring but it offers plenty for that to not be a problem.
is cheap also for the design…. mx5 is much pretty estetically… they are just saying: if you want better design buy our xiaomi mi note or go for a letv or meizu higher price phone
Take a good look at this article – https://www.gizchina.com/2015/08/14/geekbuying-has-the-redmi-note-2-on-pre-order-too/
According to Xiaomi official website, the minimum screen brightness is 1cd/m2
They also got the battery size mixed up in some of their English images actual is 3060, some of the images say 3020…
Emailed Xiaomi and 1cd/m2 is correct they made an error in translation
This one is going to be sold out before it’s even available … what a price! Shame about the lack of B20 though but I guess I can live with it since it’s the only shortcoming.
Finally a Xiaomi phones that really gets my attention. Too bad there is not fingerprint reader. But nevertheless, its a great phone for the money.
Come on this is such a budget phone and you were expecting a fingerprint reader?
Hey Andi,
Do you know whether this has Gorilla Glass??? Doesn’t seem to be mentioned.
no gorilla glass, only info i found says only “glass” so maybe not plastic
This is much better than OP2 imo.
a big YES!!
It’s all about price/performance ratio. And it seems Xiaomi will blow them all away. It’s too early to talk yet, it’s better waiting reviews.

I doubt it. But for the price it’s an amazing bargain.
No NFC. It seems it will be a must have with Android pay. Oneplus two neither has nfc.
@Andi, do you have any idea why most of current launched China phones lack NFC? Afaik, NFC adoption in the west is finally taking off. Also, i would expect fingerprint scanners because of support by Android M
It’s not massively used yet in China.
It’s not massively used in the west either, but this is chickenegg? If all phone makers leave it out, it ‘ll never be used ;-). If Chinese phone makers also want their phones to be used in the west, it might help keeping in NFC.
NFC chip does costs money, every penny counts I guess for low costs phones. Since most Chinese phones are not officially released outside China, they don’t have to considerate that. Just like the 4G band 20 story, a lot of Chinese phones usually don’t have it.
If NFC usage is becoming more popular, they have plenty of time to include it in next year’s model or a couple of years later.
It was included for years no one used it. Even today with Apple and Samsung, the majority of people are not using it. There was a report last week that the number of people using Apple Pay has dropped considerably. It is a gimmick feature most people will try out a few times and never go back to. Besides the fact that most countries have no use for NFC.
thank you
I dont know if you noticed Xiaomi phones in the main are not for the west So they are not thinking us when they make them so they dont have to consider us when they make them
i think with more and more android security problems and with very slow , if any , updates for phones it is kind of financial suicide to use phones with google pay or similar

This just makes me even more excited for the next Mi phone. What do they have in store for Mi5, SD 820 or Helios X20?
maybe Helios X20 with provision for 200 GB(Sandisk) microsd card? :)..having said that even X10 is more than enough for my use.
Won’t make a difference if Google continues its trend of limiting support for SD cards. It’s only a matter of time before Google abandons them completely and tries to push more people to it’s cloud services. Personally I switched to OTG a long time ago and have never looked back.
Yea but they wont…they are supporting sd cards better @ next big update
They won’t right now, but that doesn’t mean they won’t in the future. Especially with how much progress is being made with LTE networks around the world. Once every country has reasonable access (meaning not insanely expensive) to LTE you can kiss SD card support goodbye.
Live in the now man…..thats waaaaay in the future
As is the X20 and 200GB SD Card support (which don’t actually exist, 256 does).

Qualq said they 100% wont release sd820 phones until early next year
Expect it at MWC
Where did they say 100%?
I will buy it!

At least you are honesth 😀

Great phone
The ZF 2 is good, but not great. I had a ZF6 before.
I expected to see the UI going blazing fast with the 4G RAM, it does not. I don’t feel any difference with my ZF 6. You can open more apps, great! But who need to open 50 apps?
The camera is performing well only outdoor and under the sun. Otherwise the colours are weirds, too much yellow the shapes are pixelated.
And Asus screw up everybody with the ZF Selfies that clearly got better camera for less money.
Anyway: Don’t buy the Zenfone 2.

Even if you purchased Zenphone 2, Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 is still affordable to have another phone. One request to Xiaomi, please start your sales with
a) Black/Grey version
b) With options of both 16 and 32 GB
Black versions are more popular than white versions so please please when you at least send the phones to markets like India understand that Black phone is always preferred even over silver and gold coloured ones
Yeah I guess that I will buy the Xiomi for my mother in law. And I will wait a couple of month for the price to go down to buy the Samsung Note Edge.

That’s true, black and white must be the first always, I hate those gay colours they have, most girls don’t like pink, like violet, not that gay blue, just blue.

sorry but I’d like to introduce a fact: If meizu chose a microprocessor with a power vr6200 everybody says it’s a shit, now if xiaomi’s chose it, it’s wonderful…. I don’t understand xiaomi fanboys
Man just look at the price… 125 bucks… Isnt dat Wonderfull?
yes it is, I was going to buy a new low budget phone and I don’t know if to buy this or the cheaper lenovo k3 note, I’m just saying that strangely nobody is seeing that, that’s the point , meizu mx4 offered the same gpu for a sligthly more last year and everybody was pissed off
It isnt 125! 170 from gizchina at the moment, but lets see its price when they get stock. Plus shipping fees and local taxes, which is +27% over here! This is the way how a phone price is getting doubled 🙁
Im just talking in general (stock price lol) we encountered the same situation when jiayu s3 was one of the most hyped phones last winter
Boy the price was the same
Around 130 bucks and resellers had it for 230 …
I see. Then its definitely not a $125 phone for us and for rest of the world outside china. This is what only matters for me. am I selfish? lol
Judging by your scarf – Yes…
>:D
Sexy =3 ….
Damn Quick charge 2.0 ?? What do you mean by that this phone has a mediatek SoC
3GB ram would be good, coz my nexus 7 2013 with 2GB ram sometimes lags too much, even on bloatware free custom cm12.1 rom.
lets see if Xiaomi has optimized their phone BETTER than the nexus … at least for their OWN UI rather than CM …
I am hoping for that, still 2GB looks thing from past, not everyone can afford to change device every three to six months, no matter how cheap the device is. Also android M is coming this fall or upcoming spring season. Also I am a little bit worried about the 5 lens camera, xiaomi is famous for their camera, that’s too using 6 lens. Future is what most people looks into.
lets wait for the market to expand a bit … end of the year looks good for something under $200 to match a premium experience … but it’ll require ALOT of patience and ALOT of searching …

whats the difference between TD-LTE and FDD LTE ?
also , is Quick Charge 2.0 explained in the release ceremony?
TD-LTE (or TDD) Stands for Time Division Long Term Evolution. FD (or FDD) is Frequency Division. The major difference between the two is the frequencies they use and how they use them. TD operates on higher bands with a higher frequency (38, 40, 41) But I won’t bore you with technical details.
Most Networks around the world operate on FD, TD is used mainly in Asia and Africa. Pakistan where you live operated on FD.

But I heard, that earlier version of redmi note with mediatek’s processor was worse with updates than version with Qualcomm’s processor :/ Same scenario here?
“The Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 will be available in green, blue, yellow, white and pink from 16th August in China.”
WTF! No black?

Hi I’m using redmi note 2 the Chinese say it can support 32gb micro sd but in my country Malaysia the phone can support 64gb micro sd class 10 ultra without hanging but my friend had try 128gb class 10 it work but you must format it as fat 32 using PC not in the phone because it will automatically format phones memory as well tq
