“Leisurely Wings” Slate PC Tugs At My Retro Heart

This is quite simply an amazing product!

I’ve never really seen one, I don’t know what operating system it uses and I have no idea when it comes out, but its still fantastically remarkable.

I could just leave it there and not explain myself, but that would just be rude.

The “Leisurely Wings” tablet’s story starts last year when a Mr Dong Guan showed off his concept of a slate style computer. After much praise and head nodding the “leisurely Wings” disappeared and seem seem to become vaporware.

The slate pc shown then is very similar to what is shown here (although there are now three versions) so why did it take a year for a product that was finished a year ago to reach production?

Well, and this is why I think it’s amazing!

The design, specification, prototyping, sourcing, and some manufacture have been entirely carried out by one person! Mr Dong Guan decided he didn’t want anyone else interfering with his baby so went ahead and built it himself.

The result is a rather purposeful looking device, with an 80’s style influence. There is no unnecessary flash and glitter, just black plastic and edges. The style isn’t going to win everyone over, but it’s tugging at my retro heart strings!
The 11.6 inch screened slate (It looks more like a slate rather than a tablet to me) weighs in at an impressive 0.99kg and is packed with 1Gb of RAM and a 160Gb hard drive. The netbook style internals continue with a choice of either an Atom N450 CPu, Atom N450 + ION2 CPu or an SU2300 powered model. A 4600mAh battery powers things and can run for about 3-4 hours with the back-light set around half way.
The device has all the usual ports and plugs, Ethernet, VGA, SD card reader, 3 USB’s and even a HDMI out (a 3G version is in the works)

Release is on hold at the moment due to overheating and touch screen problems but prices have been set and are very competitive:

• N450 model:        3000RMB         $442
• N450 + ION2:     3700RMB          $546
• SU2300:              4000RMB         $590
