As you are probably well aware, Google managed to ruffle some feathers when they released the Android mobile operating system. One particular batch of feathers they managed to thoroughly disrupt we’re the ones attached to Apple’s frilly heads, this little upset coupled with Apple’s desire to control practically everything associated with their products has made certain things seem a little more difficult than they actually are.
For example did you know it’s actually very fast and simple to sync your Android Tablets (phones) built in calendar application with the calendar loaded on to your Apple Mac laptop or home computer? Well it is and here’s how to do it!
Full details after the jump!
What you need;
- A Google gmail account.
- Your Mac.
- Your Android Tablet or Phone.
- About 2 minutes of free time.
As there is currently no way to get your Android Tablet or phone to directly sync with your iCal calendar, the first thing you must do is let your Gmail account sync with iCal to do this follow these steps;
Gizchina News of the week
- Open Apple iCal, go to Preferences and then the Accounts tab.
- Click on the + button to add an account.
- In the box that pops up, enter a description for the account and your Google Account username and password.
- Under Server Options, add the following URL: https://www.google.com/calendar/dav/YOUREMAIL@DOMAIN.COM/user Replace ‘YOUREMAIL@DOMAIN.COM’ with the email address that you use to log in to Calendar. Make sure to include the ‘@domain.com’ portion (which is @gmail.com for Gmail users) in this section. DO NOT substitute your username for ‘user’ at the end of the URL.
- Leave the Use Kerberos v5 for authentication option unchecked.
- Click Add.
- Under the Delegation tab, select the calendars you’d like to add to iCal by checking the boxes next to them. You may need to hit refresh to get the latest list of calendars.
- Add your email address to your Address Book card by selecting Add Email. You’ll be prompted to add your email address only if your address is not already in your Address Book.
After you have completed these steps your user name should show up under your iCal’s list of calendars, this also means you now have a Google calendar which is very handy if you are ever without your Android tablet or phone and no where near your Mac as you can log in to your Gmail and check your schedules.
Now that you have iCal and Google acting nicely with one another you now need to get Google to sync with you Android device.
If you haven’t already done so set up your Gmail email on your table or phone. Once that’s come head t;
settings > accounts
Choose the Gmail account you want to sync and choose ‘Sync Calendar’ you will also be given an option of how often you want Google to refresh your calendar.
Now that you are all set-up each time you add an event to one of your calendars, either your iCal, Google Calendar or the calendar application on your Android Tablet or phone, Google’s servers will be set in to action and will update all your connected devices!
