Google along with Samsung launched the latest version of Android earlier today. The new OS from Google continues with delicious ice-cream based naming which began with Android 2.2 Froyo and has been officially named Android 4.0 Ice-cream Sandwich.
The update was accompanied by the release of Samsung’s 3rd generation Galaxy smartphone the Galaxy Nexus! Which they have assured the public they desinged completely by themselves, despite Apple’s best efforts to claim the Korean company has been greatly influenced by iPhone patents!
So what does this update to Ice-crea Sandwich, the 4th major update for the Google operating system mean for Android tablets? Well as 4.0 is being pegged as a phone OS, yet it superceeds Honeycomb 3.0 the tablet only OS the suggestions being made are than both Android tablets and phones will share the same OS from now on.
Gizchina News of the week
What’s more, as most Android 2.3 Gingerbread devices are likely to receive the update, although HTC seems to be dragging their heals about the decision, it would be logical that the majority of the current crop of Chinese made Android tablets will also be eligable for Ice-cream Sandwich update!
So while we may have not seen as many locally produced bargain Honeycomb tablets over the past year, there is a slight chance bargain prices Android 4.0 Ice-cream Sandwich tablets are just on the horizon!
What do you guys think? Will Google make Ice-cream Sandwich open source so that Chinese vendors can offer tablets with the latest OS, or will Google go down the closed wall approach they did with Honeycomb?
