One of the concerns or questions many people have about Chinese phones is “do they get updates?” The answer is some of them do as we can see here from the leaked photos of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean running on the Amoi N820.
While I can’t speak for the smaller brands big Chinese phone brands certainly do launch updates for their phones. Xiaomi, Meizu and Oppo all launch regular updates and now Amoi are joining in to with a Jelly Bean update for the Amoi N820!
Amoi are expected to roll out the update to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean on 20th October, however it’s not known if this will be an OTA update or one requiring owners of the phone to download and install the package from the Amoi homepage.

NICE !!!!
do you think that newman n1 will ever get android 4.1 ?
Indeed, looking to buy either the Newman N1 or the ZTE v970 but wondering if any of these are likely to get an Android 4.1 and/or Android 4.2 update in the near future.
Suprised the Amoi N820 is getting one, but since the Newman N1 and the ZTE v970 are more supported on XDA I am thinking about getting one of those.
well i did order my newman and waiting for it to arrive
and the support on XDA is on of the reasons that i got this phone
but they say that android 4.1 is related to how much the newman company want to support it’s phone because even if someone on XDA wants to create a rom based on 4.1 he needs the drivers from newman company
but since Andi here have some friends in china, i think he can ask the newman company by email and tell us
Hi Andi I’ve been loving your blog and I read it daily. I’ve decided to purchase my first Chinese mobile, the HDC Galaxy S3 i9300 EX. Do these clone phones ever receive updates? Or is it only big manufatures that update their phones OS?
My purchase of the Big V keeps getting better by the day. It will be interesting to see if Etotalk provide its customers with a Custom Firmware update. Fingers Crossed!
@ James: I would be careful of the HDC EX (if you’re buying from fastcardtech.com). I’ve read around about it, and all it is, is a Star B92M. For some reason, HDC took the innards, and put their brand on it :S. A bit dodgy looking.
And I really wonder… does the B92M really have such high hardware specs? Such as the 12MP camera, and the 1gb RAM, and the 1280*720 resolution? If someone could confirm this, it would be great π
Wouldn’t be surprised if this was the case. Seems like the norm with Chinese mobile companies! I’ll do a full review and bench test it once I get it…hopefully it is what it is!
Fastcardtech? Good luck with that.
It is a gamble. I hope it pays off. It’s an amazing phone for the price.
I am very happy than I changed my order from the Jiayu G3 to an Amoi N820 now. Waiting for it to arrive!!! π
beg to differ. meizu has not released JB update nor a well functioning update since 2.3. Flybe is a piece of utter jerkery
good to see 4.1 on a mediatek chipset, hope Zopo does the same.
Using Zopo own words: ” …at some point in the future…” . Since I own one of those, I hope that point it’s not …too far in the future.
I’ve heard about a Amoi N821. It is being said that it has a better screen, but the firmware is not compatible.
Do you know any more info?
Is this Amoi N820/821 has notification led for missed call or when charging? Some site says, but some doesn’t. Can anybody using this phone confirm?
Thanks
Hi guys, just to let you know, I sent an email to Etotalk from whom I have purchased Amoi N821 asking about the Jelly Bean upgrade. Apparently the upgrade is not stable, here is the reply i got: βAfter our testing, Jelly Bean is not stable at the moment. If there is a stable version JB, we will provide a tutorial to help you install it.β
