While we could all make it to CES this year we did have our spys prowling the show floor, and they’ve done us proud with this hands on video of the 6.1-inchHuaweiAscend Mate!
This year at CES, Chinese phone giant Huawei released what they are claiming to be the world’s largest smartphone, and with its monstrous 6.1-inch 720p display who are we to argue with the Ascend Mate!
I’ll be honest with you all now, when I first saw the Ascend Mate I though “what a ridiculous device”, but after watching this hands on and seeing the phone in action, the monster Huawei is beginning to grow on me!

This phone looks really great and has some nice advantages with the OS tweaks, large battery and processor.
Now where’s the dual sim version Huawei? 😉
Editorial Opinion:
Personally, I’m quite dissappointed with Huawei right now, and most of the comes from the “shoot from the hip” style of their CEO, Richard Yu.
Just a few days ago at CEO, he was interviewed bashing Apple and Samsung for “holding back” for the sake of profit and slowing down innovation (http://www.androidauthority.com/huawei-best-smartphone-146210/), but what about Huawei?
For a month, Yu was popping up in public and showing a 1080p version of the Ascend Mate and claiming that it was running a 1.8Ghz quad core processor, yet when the product was finally reveiled, it only has a 720p screen and a rather pedistrian 1.5Ghz processor. As the CEO of the company, I can’t believe that he didn’t know well in advance what the final shipping product’s specs would be, yet he chose to decieve the public and try to delay the public from buying competing devices by promising a phone that had false specs.
I was quite excited about the Ascend Mate UNTIL the REAL specs were revealed. Now I’m just dissapoint, and left with a general distrust of Huawei’s marketing practices. For a company trying to establish itself as a credible player in the market, they’re off to a poor start. In my mind, Huawei’s credibility is at an all time low.
In the future, it would be better for Huawei to either keep their devices a secret before launch, or to follow one of the rules my grandfather taught me, “Always under-promise and over-deliver”.
Note: This opinion is my own and doesn’t represent the thoughts of Gizchina.com.
totally agree on this issue. i was also hugely disappointed when they finally unveiled the product. there was no reason ask the customers to hold back shopping, if they don’t deliver the products with the specification lower than the competing devices. I surely now go for Note II . Best of luck for Huawei Ascend Mate II in future.
