Yesterday we had the JiaYu G4 unboxing and today we have the UMi X2! UMi have been good enough to let us borrow a sample UMi X2 to review, and great timing too as we can do a full comparison with the JiaYu G4!

It would be nice to see a performance comparison against HTC One and Samsung S4 – this is the most interesting thing about these phones from China.

  Benchmark doesn’t tell everything but it does tell something when it’s almost twice higher and more than twice pricier.

    @Andi, Funny since your spreadsheet does not even mention a 16GB version.
    Does this mean UMI are just as fake as Jiayu and NEO with their high spec phones, but false claims?
    I’m really tired of all this hype, media attention and information. While nothing of it seems to be true or remotely close to being released.

      Nope, it means they are offering a 1GB RAM ‘Youth’ model at a lower price as well as the 2GB RAM Premium model

Andi, great review video. Please we are curious about the 3G 900/1800 band please. Kindly confirm.
Secondly, all the Chinese phones seems not to support 3G 900/1800. I’ve been battling with this for a long time now and it’s affecting my daily visits to this great site. Can you one or two MT6589 phones with 3G 900/1800 band apart from Zopo and ThL?

    That’s what all GSM networks in my country use both 2G and 3G. So I’ve been wondering if these phones will actually work in my country since their 3G bands are stated to be 850/2100Mz. Do you have any idea if this will be compatible Simon?

The UMI 5″ is screen si bigger than JiaYu 5″ screen.
How is this possible? And no, is not about the bezel. I hope Andy will measure the exactly dimensions.

I noticed, that in most tech spec listings for the X2-Turbo 802.11n mode is NOT listed, whereas the slower 1.2GHz X2 supposedly has it, even though I couldn’t find anything about 2.4/5GHz dual-band and/or 300Mbps dual stream support.
Is it even possible in this day and time to still launch a new phone of this class missing out on .11n WiFi?

  Why do you need 802.11n anyway? with an SDcard write speed of 10Mb/sec (and that’s being generous) what do you think 300Mb/sec compared to say 54Mb/sec is actually going to speed up? I’ll guarantee you will never see any difference between the two protocols on the same device. The read/write speed for caching on the phone itself is the bottleneck.

    Maybe for Miracast?
    Sounds very strange to me that in year 2013 to ask why somebody want more than the g standard. Now even n is not enough for streaming video from our android gadgets and we want more.

      You have misunderstood me. Everything you download or stream off the internet is written or “cached” to your phone before its displayed to you. It doesn’t come straight off the wireless and onto your screen, its the same as any computer. I am saying that caching process is what is going to slow your phone down. Its the same issue android owners were reporting a while back where they had to upgrade their SD cards to class 10 to be able to record in 1080p, because the sd card couldn’t write fast enough for 1080p video. (and that’s only 3Mb/sec and you are now talking about 300mb/sec)
      You are trying to make a bottle of water fill faster by using a larger funnel with the same sized bottle. it will make no difference.

        Yes, you are right, I agree with you.
        Today Miracast have some delay. I don’t know if the delay is because of wireless or of the processing, but for sure I don’t want a g standard on my Miracast capable smartphone.
        Also I have another gadget which is streaming 720p video to my smarphone and I want to be smooth as possible. Being a quad-core I think the processor is enough, and the question remains about the wireless standard.
        I have media players from few years ago and I know wireless streaming of 1080p from my network to my player is almost impossible. With 720p is OK.

Andi, u schould change both X2 specs above, cse we all can see (on your video) that on third internal side of “phone-book” box is writed: WCDMA 900/2100Mhz (not 850/2100), and aperture size is F/2.2 (not better F/2.0 like Umi promissed before). Also Andi I’ve been teling this from weeks here and u didn’t change it stlill, and now u deleting my comments – why ?

I think I prefer the G4, but only because Jiayu have managed to squeeze that 4.7″ screen into such a small chassis. I think the G4 looks much better in Andi’s hand, although I do like the design of the X2.
It’s a shame manufacturers are having trouble getting their 2GB RAM models to market, especially for those devices that are running 1080p screens because they will really need the extra RAM IMHO. It would be interesting to know whether manufacturers are the source of the over optimistic delivery schedules, or if perhaps MediaTek themselves really are behind the problems. At this rate Qualcomm might get their cheap A7 SoC designs to market and spoil the party!
I know others have mentioned it Andi, but if you could definitively tell us whether or not USB OTG and tv out via MHL work on these handsets it would be great to know.
Also, if I’m going to have to go for one of the MT6589 devices with 1GB RAM which often come with only 4GB ROM, I’d love to know if it’s possible to install apps to the external SD card (or at least their data). For example, on my now deceased Galaxy Note II, it was only possible to install apps to the internal SD card, and as there was only 10GBs available after a factory reset, games soon took up that space.
It may be a good thing that UMI only sent Andi the 1GB RAM X2, because now we will see how the same SoC performs with both 720 and 1080 screens, side by side in the same week 🙂 I thought the G4 already looked smoother than the X2 just from Andi’s short unboxing videos.

Why are you talking about your phone? Don’t you have media files stored on any device connected to your home LAN that you want to display on the big screen?
And no, doing the SD card leg-copy is not acceptable in that scenario, that’s like running back and forth carrying floppies back in the days.
Smart engineers invented WiFi to wirelessly get data transferred from one location to another.
802.11g has only a borderline sufficient throughput for streaming HD video, since only about 40% of its gross throughput is actually available on a good day, assuming no other client wants to additionally use the access point at the same time.
So single stream .11n delivers up to some 60Mb/s under the same conditions, which should be enough for streaming, but still is poor, when it comes to transferring data or if more wireless clients are involved.
300Mb/s dual stream .11n in run of the mill routers is available for more than 3 years now and even the majority of small .11n USB dongles support that mode since at least 2010 (Ralink RT20xx ring a bell?).
So why should I expect anything less in a 2013 HDMI mini-PC?

  It happens with long posts or should I say a post that has lots of comments in it. Up to a certain number of comments will follow the hierarchy n then the rest will just be disconnected even though you pressed the reply button. I found it weird too at first but then I found out why. There’s a bug in the coding that’s all.
