First cracked UMi X2 screen!

According to UMi and the specifications they are posting, the UMi X2 has a Corning GorillaGlass 2, 5-inch display. It doesn’t seemed to have helped this X2 owner though!

These photos were sent to us by a reader named Stephen. We’re not sure how this happened but it appears the X2 was dropped on its top left hand corner and the screen has cracked along the front.

We’re waiting to hear which model UMi X2 this is, but being as it was bough ahead of the official launch we suspect that this is one of the few prototype samples which went on sale earlier this month. If that is the case then the display could be the flat panel version we have on our UMi X2 sample and not the curved Gorilla Glass version we have seen on the official specifications!

The good news is that the company Stephen bought this UMi X2 off has agreed to sort it out, which is a fantastic result!

What is progress regarding UMI X2 commercial release, we here in india have already paid the full amount and waiting for device to launch & no representative of UMI is coming online, we are stuck, Pls help whether they are fake or Official..

  They are not one in the same. The ‘International’ release is actually just UMi working with Antelife and Pandawill and a few other online stores to offer the phone internationally. The India release is being handled by the distributors there.

@Andi, Antelife says it has only MTK6589 chip X2, not the turbo one. and the turbo model is expected by the end of this year…. whereas chinapadmall & aliexpress have already listed these turbo models on presell & they are confident of shipping it out after 25th of may….
which one is true ? you say antelife & pandawill are official partners for international retailing…. from where to buy & which one to choose ? whom mshould we trust now ? pls provide us some proof so that we can trust these sellers about the stock & latest updates about hardware changes…. antelife says turbo model is just an engineering prototype….
just throw us some light on this issue pls

  I spoke to Antelife head of marketing yesterday and was told they hope to the Turbo version mid June. My guess is they don’t want anyone to know they are getting the Turbo version so soon incase they can’t sell the regular models in the meantime.

    Chinapadmall.com claims to sell the turbo version from 25.05 and will have plenty in stock.
    I believe them, at least that UMI promised them to deliver eanough…
    But Im really faithful that UMI will screw it up ^^

      I’m like you. I contacted Chinapadmall after I booked one umi x2 with 1,5 Ghz as published on the webstore. Their answer : we noted your request and the 1.5GHZ may be a rumor as we did not get confirmed from the manufacture , and what we will sell is what will be available in the market , if there is version of 1.5GHZ ,we will send it to you ,thanks for your understanding

exactly why i would never buy UMI again the x1 broke after a few days i wrote about that in the umi x1 forum, so did another guy who had teh same happen to him , Jiyau all the way , i have 2 G3’s one my wife has one i have no problems at all , cant wat to get another new range one but will wait until read the reviews , not keen on the G4 i prefer the g3 build so will wait for g5 or G6

I’m proud to say, that I was the first owner with a tiny crack, this was almost a month ago.

    simon i dropped mine i was sat on the couch and when it dropped about 2 feet , hit the laminate floor and broke , jiyau g3 dropped many times and nothing 🙂

        Hi Shiva it cost me 193 dolllars to replace ! 😀 i decided not to bother with UMI garbage and bought a quality Jiayu G3 instead that was the best decision.. gave the cracked umi away before i hit it with a hammer … now just ordered the jiauyu G3 quad 1.5 version cant wat for that to arrive…

It was 3 weeks ago, I’m still sleeping.
I contacted antelife the same day, and they only wanted to contact UMI for me about a screen replacement. Never heard anything after that, will contact them now again.

  hi there i am the owner of the cracked umi x2 in the picture got a response of antelife,they asked me to send it back and i will have to pay for a new screen although they don’t know the price yet, and as said below it seems to be an inbuilt design to ensure after sales, a let down really.

I think is Gorill Ass.
I don’t believe too much any chinese company which say thei have a true Gorilla Glass. How can we check if it is a real Gorila?
These heavy smartphones ALL must have a very good glass because is very possible to break it. The selling of touch screens and displays will be bigger than ever with these 5inches smartphones. I already ordered 2 touchscreens and one display from China for 2 smartphones. And never in my life ordered such things.
Again: how can we check if Gorilla Glass or not?
I remember Carl Zeiss Jenna have some glass hologram to prove their lens is true. But what about Gorilla? I should trust a seller which today say it not have and tomorrow say will have Gorilla? How a display become Gorilla over night? Some Gorilla is making some strange thing over the phone?

I had same problem with umi x1 – screen cracked out of nowhere while phone been held in my pocket. more than one month old. It’s a very good phone with great quality screen but after experiacing all problems with quality x1 had (poor quality of silver looking frame and audio jack input) I will never ever buy another umi product. I wanted to replace screen and it costs …. 100 $ so yeah…. Very friendly price LOL

  Really OMG that’s quite expensive i had to replace the screen for my iphone and it costed $50 but i actually drop it ..if Umix1 was in you pocket then that’s quite dangerous
  i always rely on my headphones when i get up if i forget to hold the phone they got my back lol, but that one time i was not wearing them 🙁

Gorilla glass is not the problem here (if infact this particular phone has/had it). Gorilla glass / Dragontrail / any other alkali-aluminosilicate sheet glass – cand withstand alot more abuse than most other for of “glass”, but none are indistructible. If you’re unlucky and drop your phone on a hard surface, “corner first” – the ammount of force substained to the phone, and thus the glass – is immensive. To make things worse – on most new phones, the glass is seamlessly glued to the entire surface of the phone. If such an impact as menitoned occurs – the frame of the phone will flex – in most of the directions wich the “glass” is not flexible. The result can be seen is the above article.
The reason this doesn’t happen NEARLY as often with designs like the Jiayu G3 – is that the glass is clamped down down by a frame on both diagonal sides – and thus does not need to be glued all around the surface. In case of a drop/impact, this allows for a certain degree of flexing in the frame of the phone, without the glass itself being exposed to these forces.

Umi should have checked this out before selling them that simple, if they didnt do that with the umi x1 and it looks like the x2 as well … then will you buy any future products from them ? especially when they want stupid money to replace aham (ur mistake) ????     Although I’m quite a Jiayu-buff myself, It’s not really that simple. Almost all phone manufacturers today go for the seamless, slick design – and its pretty clear that this is a priority with the average consumer. A semless design does not allow for any othe solution, than “glue all around”.
    That means, pretty much /all/ phones are subject to this risk – and will be on the forseeable future.
    The construction of the Jiayu G3 is as far from “seamless” as a modern phone gets – and I really hope more manufacturers will consider the positive traits that comes with this – but in reality, we probably won’t see this much often. Maybe not even from Jiayu. After all, at the end of the day – even Jiayu needs to sell as many sets as possible – and thus cannot cater to the individual customer. Thats a game for top players, than can afford low sales.

So – this can happen from a few feet drop (maybe even less) – if it impacts the surface “correctly”. This is not a consequence of a poorly manufactured phone – its simply beyond the capacity and strength of todays materials.
The cheapest way to protect from this (no guarantees though), is to get one of these rubber frames or similar covers. They are really cheap, and protects your phone from the kind of “bump” that is most likely to be the cause of glass and/or screen breakage.

If phone is dropped well it’s not its fault that screen breaks but if screen breaks in your pocket with crack starting somwhere between home and back button it means that design is faulty. I see no reason for manufacturer to use technology they can’t fully support (gorilla or dragontail) cause for end user problem is that screen is cracked and replacement is very dear.even though it works good it looks poor with a crack.   If the screen breaks in your pocket, without being subjected to something sharp like the corner of a heavy box you’re carring, or bumping into something – /that/ would suggest poor quality control on the glass sheet used, or assembly. Ordinary mineral and lime glass can’t really take much of a hit, but gorilla glass, dragontrail and the likes are supposed to handle quite an impact directly towards the glass.
  The main purpose of these glass technologies regarding todays phones, is not to withstand immense force – but scratch resistance. Ideally, you’d want to interface with the screen directly – not through an additional layer of protective plastic ^^

I’m proud to say that* got my umi x2 cracked today!!
I bought it in antelife, i just contact they to buy a new screen.
Once i broken it, i took a screwdriver and scratch really hard the screen, and for my surprise, not scratches at all.

Hi,
I bought my UMI X2 at Antelife as well.
After two weeks and no hard use, falling etc. My screen cracked.
I´ve send Antelife two e-mails to solve this problem.
So far no response at all!
Does anybody know how to fix it if I don’t get a reponse from Antelife?

  this seems common at this point with the umi x2, my camera glass even cracked in my pocket lol i contacted service in Antelife and they gave me address to post it but at this point theres a dent in the bezel and cracked screen and camera, not sure if its economical to repair at this point, contact service at antelife, they will get back in mention you posted your issue on here.

Shiva i think you miss understood me .. i didnt replace the screen i just thought that the quality was so bad of the umi phone, i decided not even to repair it and bought a jiayu g3 instead of even thinking to replace the screen.. if it broke that easy why would i pay to have the screen replaced only to have the same problem maybe again some time ? 🙂 i would probably be paying money out for more screens for ever 😀

  the fact is outer glass which is mentioned gorilla doesn’t seem gorilla and mine outer screen gorilla is cracked but they will replace whole lcd which i think is not good as i have fine lcd working perfectly and just crack near LED, its like u got cut and ask doc for bandaid and they say ur whole hand will be replaced

Hi Richard,
I bought UMIx2 direct from China and its glass was broken in Nov. 2013. As the the specification it was build by the corning Gorilla Glass 2 and it couldn’t crack like it. I tried to contact company directly but they are not answering. There is lots of issue in that phone but my bad luck that i can’t avail warranty.
Richard, is there any forum where i can put my all three issues to resolve..
Power button is not working properly and has to press hard to open.
Screen goes black during call and can’t cancel call.
Sometime Phone Goes hang.
Gorilla Glass is cracked. (Which is impossible if it is Gorilla)

hi i dropped my umi x2 now the screen is cloudy and with many colored lines , i can use the phone but the screen is hard to see, bought from noto-tech , they seem to be out of business now as i cannot access their website , where can i get this repaired, i can send photos of the screen if needed
