The Xiaomi “Red Rice” has been spotted and mentioned in various rumours over the past few months, however today it becomes unofficially official thanks to leaked document from the Chinese Ministry of Communication.
For a smartphone to go on sale in China the manufacturers must first receive a Network License for their new model. For anyone wanting to get details of the latest phones the official Ministry of Commuincations website is a great resource!
Gizchina News of the week
The latest phone to be spied getting it’s official stamp of approval is the mysterious Xiaomi “Red Rice”. The document shows the familiar red back of the new budget phone along with specification details including 1GB RAM, 8GB ROM, 8 mega-pixe rear camera, 4.7-inch display and 1.5Ghz MT6589T CPU.
Xiaomi haven’t made an official announcement of the new phone, but we believe it will cost around 999 Yuan ($160) here in China and will launch around October, which is when we also expect to see the Xiaomi Mi3.
TD SCDMA network, so not for me, too bad!
So thats a China-only phone then
Too bad, unless you want a really expensive mp3 player.
Hopefully this means that developers will be able to port MIUI ROMs to other MT6589 devices. For those of us in Europe that have trouble getting hold of Xiaomi’s hardware, that would be great.
Probably is not the lack of the necesary info, i bet is more the lack of interest in that particular SoC, also is quite new (by this i mean that it enough people is interested in porting miui into this SoC, it will hapend way before red rise is released)
