Proving that the Chinese phone market is going from strength to strength here are 6 top quad-core MT6589 phones launched in China today!

If you are a true Android phone fan then China is the place to be. The pace of development is so amazing that it appears that there is at least one new phone available every single day! In fact though the truth is even more exciting, and just today 6 top quad-core MT6589 phones launched!

6 top quad-core MT6589 phones launched today!

Neo N003

white neo n003

The first pre-sale of the Neo N003 began today at 10am here in China. Chinese phone fans were finally offer the chance to order either the standard (1GB RAM, 4GB ROM) version or the advanced (2GB RAM 32GB ROM) model, but with only 10,000 up for grabs we imagine there were plenty of upset customers!

Neo N003 highlights

Although the Neo N003 has launched later than other similar phones, it happens to pack a few more features than the rivals including OTG, MHL, 13 mega-pixel rear camera, up to 2GB RAM, Yamaha audio, and a 1.5Ghz quad-core MT6589T chipset.

Mlais MX58 Pro

mlais mx58 mt6589T

Similar in specification to the Neo N003 the Mlais MX58 Pro was up for pre-sale earlier today at the slightly lower price of 1199 Yuan.

Mlais MX58 pro highlight

Like the N003 the MX58 Pro boasts a 5-inch 1920 x 1080 FHD full 1080 display however the display on the Mlais benefits from protective Gorilla Glass! The phone also features a 1.5Ghz quad-core MT6589 processor, 1GB RAM, 4GB built in memory, support for 64GB SD cards, 12 mega-pixel rear camera, 2500mAh battery and a 9.6mm thick body.

Dakele 2X

quad-core MT6589 2GB big cola 2 launched

The Dakele 2X presales started at 10am today and like the rest of the phones here is only currently available on the local Chinese market. The Dakele doesn’t get the same Turbo processor update as some of the phones here, but it does benefit from a larger display and relatively low-price.

Dakele 2X Highlights

A generous 5.3-inch display is quite a bonus, but resolution is down to just 720, however IPS and OGS plus a laminated finish ensure that this is a nice looking screen despite the lower pixel count. The chipset is the standard 1.2 quad-core MT6589 with 1GB RAM and 4GB memory, while the rest of the hardware includes a 3 mega-pixel front camera, 13 mega-pixel rear, 3000mAh battery, plus MHL and OTG functions.

Aparently, the Neo N003 youth is the cheaper Quad core, with 5″ FHD 1080 screen.
My only doubt about buying it, is that is so new, developers didn’t make custom roms for it yet.
I am thinking betwin the Neo N003 youth, or the Iocean X7 youth.

Andi – placing order for an iOcean X7 Elite, since it’s the only 1 available in India from your list. Any “watch out for….” cons of going for this ? For me WiFi and GPS must be top notch, and “buttery smooth” interface (as you so succinctly put it) would be a god-send. And hopefully I wouldn’t have to deal with the “insufficient storage available…” monster that I currently face with my 512 MB RAM phone? Advice appreciated in advance !

  39. Patrick
    June 25, 2013

They can’t be serious ? On the outside Chinese phones are getting flashier, but the ability to make phone calls anywhere in the GSM world appears to decrease with every new generation. The Neo N003 on GSM is only a two band phone. The iocean supports GSM only on 1800/1900 MHz. Technically these phones are 3G phones, but only on 2100 MHz. Again, pretty useless if you venture outside of large cities where in Europe it is essential to have 3G on 900 MHz.

    • Hecke
      June 25, 2013

What do you mean with “2-band-phone”? I cant use it in Europe?

      • Patrick
        June 25, 2013

The Neo 003 will work on GSM (900/1800 MHz) in Europe. But in many other areas (such as the US) it will not work at all. 3G in Europe on the Neo003 (as with most other Chinese phones) will suffer from limited network coverage. The reason for this is that 3G on 2100 MHz is used by many providers to cover only the densely populated areas whereas outside of big cities the 900MHz band is used for 3G service. The reason is simple physics. 900MHz covers large distances better and therefore requires less antenna locations in rural areas. Therefore typically in Europe Chinese phones with the MTK chipset often only work as 2G GSM phones.

      • Patrick
        June 25, 2013

And with the Iocean the frequency issue gets even more difficult. As it only supports GSM on 1800/1900 MHz your probability of making or receiving a call is even lower. On most networks in Europe it will not work on GSM at all. Having 3G on only 2100 MHz will not help either, as high frequencies don’t penetrate into buildings very well and there will probably be no coverage at all if you leave the cities.

        • tweetycontrabajo
          June 25, 2013

          Iocean X7
          2G GSM 800/850/1800/1900MHz

          3G : WCDMA 850/2100Mhz

the 3G is kind of limitated, but de gsm is not.

          • Patrick
            June 26, 2013

Don’t trust the frequency specs on reseller websites. They are often wrong. Check the manufacturer specs (and even they can be wrong). I got my numbers from the Ioecean X7 website.

The slightly smaller Jiayu G4 could be a nice option? 720p, 4.7inch screen. The basic version is out now (1GB Ram, 3000mAh battery)!

would be interesting a list of top custom roms for chinese devices.
I look for devices roms on this list, and if i can’t find custom roms for it, i am not that sure if i want to buy it.
And sometimes i find roms for the youth version, but not the full version.
    but what the heck?
Anyways, they are too new in the market, so soon there will be custom roms for all or them, right?

I ordered some days ago for the first time from Antelife but they are not responding to my mails. Are they as reliable as I thought they are or are they just another dubious store?

Andi – placing order for an iOcean X7 Elite, since it’s the only 1 available in India from your list. Any “watch out for….” cons of going for this ? For me WiFi and GPS must be top notch, and “buttery smooth” interface (as you so succinctly put it) would be a god-send. And hopefully I wouldn’t have to deal with the “insufficient storage available…” monster that I currently face with my 512 MB RAM phone? Advice appreciated in advance !

Of this released bunch, I go with the Neo for the large battery and MHL AND OTG function. I really wish they would make a Galaxy Note 2 or 3 with that kind of power. I really like the built in sylus provided with the Note.

    • Guest
      June 25, 2013

What do you mean with “2-band-phone”? I cant use it in Europe?

    • Guest

      Iocean X7
      2G GSM 800/850/1800/1900MHz

      3G : WCDMA 850/2100Mhz

the 3G is kind of limitated, but de gsm is not.

Don’t trust the frequency specs on reseller websites. They are often wrong. Check the manufacturer specs (and even they can be wrong). I got my numbers from the Ioecean X7 website.

TCL S950 (from list above) has officially support 3G UMTS 900/2100 Mhz so this is my favorite phone from this Andy’s list.

    Hi Andi,

One of the majors issues that are not covered enough in my opinion is the frequencies support of these different phones. The specs that are listed in different websites are inconsistent and can be misleading. As Patrick mentioned above, there are different characteristics to different frequencies so if the phones are not supporting both higher and lower frequencies used by the carrier you are destined to have only partial service. I hope that with your connections you can get a formal declaration from these manufacturers regarding the frequencies support to enable us as potential buyers to make a wiser decision.

    Thanks.

      Yes, i totally support that.
why make a device with gsm quad band, and 3g only one band, or two?

      • Patrick
        June 26, 2013

I suppose because many phone manufacturers don’t have inhouse development departments. They copy the electronics from a reference design from MTK, get a stock copy of Android and just design the case around it. A bit like assembling a PC from bits.

Of all the phones so far as an international buyer I like the TCL Idol X best. The necessary frequencies are all there and the manufacturer has the size and resources to deliver the product. Let’s see how Play Store support will work out and whether there will be a 32GB version.
