Mediatek officially announced 8-core MT6592 Chipset

Mediatek have officially announce their true 8-coremobile phonechipset today. More details of the 8-coreMT6592 here.

While Samsung’s latest 8-coreprocessor still runs on the big.Little framework, the 8-core Mediatek MT6592 will be the first 8-coreprocessor which will actually run all 8 cores simultaneously.

According to a white paper (download here in Chinese) which Mediatek published today, the benefits of running all 8 cores at once include better energy efficiency, higher performance and up to a 20% increase in 1080p video frame rate.

The Whitepaper goes on to tell the benefits of a true 8-core chipset, however the actual official specifications are still missing! Earlier reports and leaks suggest that the MT6592 will features a mulit-core Mali GPU and will run 8 A7 28nm cores at unto 2ghz. The chipset will support 1080 display, HEVC and VP9 decoding, 13 mega-pixel cameras and will be able to run Android 5.0 OS.

Interesting. Last I heard, they were going to use the PowerVR SGX544MP4.
Would be very interesting now that they’re moving to the Mali GPU instead. I wonder if we’ll see the same Mali GPU as found in the latest exynos 5420

Really, really glad to see good news on the power efficiency front.
8 cores@ 1.2GHz look very very good compared to 4 core @ 2GHz
I want that in a 5″ phone.
4core @2GHZ in a 13″ tablet and 15000mAh battery! 😀

  15000mAh battery? Currently, that is almost impossible. You should not buy a smartphone. Buy a brick instead… lol

Nope, it is NOT. Sammy’s Exynos Octo 5420 (and no, I don’t call it “Octa”, since “Octo” as in octopus is the Greek name for the number 8) is going into mass production next month and it supports for the first time for any big.Little CPU, Global task scheduling (GTS for short) also known as big.LITTLE MP.

  I think Mediatek deserve credit for getting an 8-core CPU to the market very quickly. I understand that the Cortex-A7 is absolutely tiny at the 28nm process (I think I read it is only 0.5 square mm per core!), so it’s not quite the same engineering feat as the Quad-A15 + Quad-A7 of the Exynos, but it’s still impressive when you consider the MT6592 will targeted at the mainstream market, not the high end.

    I am not disputing the engineering aspect Mediatek achieved.
    The article claimed, their “MT6592 will be the first 8-core processor which will actually run all 8 cores simultaneously” and this is not true, since they got beat by Samsung being the first.
    That is my whole point I am trying to make.

      They didn’t lose, they got second place. Qualcomm and Nvidia have yet to release any octa core processors.

        Considering we somehow know the results of benchmarks of the chip I think they are the first on the market with running chips, maybe not commercial first but still first and that’s an impressive achievement considering the giants they are against

If you look at the sheer number of China phones running on Mediatek chips and even the big names using their SoCs for many of their entry and low/mid level products, MTK is anything but a dwarf either. Just 2 or 3 years ago they took over Ralink, one of the most widely used manufacturer of USB WiFi radios.
But back on track, I actually haven’t seen any benchmarks yet of the MT6592, nor of the Exynos 5420.
Fact however is, the Exynos is going into mass production in a few days, while the MTK just started the sampling phase, with mass production scheduled for November. So, just to repeat myself, Samsung is months ahead of Mediatek. By the time MTK SoCs become available for manufacturers to start production, phones/tablets with the Exynos 5420 should already be laying in the store shelfs.
