Xiaomi gave away free Hongmi phone everyone at Beijing launch

When we arrived at the Xiaomi event today we knew we were getting a goodie bag, but we got an even better free gift as we left.

It’s tradition at a Xiaomi launch that Mi Fans, the media and VIP’s get a Xioami goodie bag with T-shirt, notebook and other nice novelties, but this being the year that the Beijing phone maker became a $10 billion company they had something special in store.

As the launch of the Xiaomi Mi3 and the Xiaomi TV wound up the focus shifted to free gifts for those of us who had attended. We were thinking novelly stuffed animals but what we came away with were 2 brand new Xiaomi Hongmi phones! Not just us though but the entire audience!

Gizchina News of the week

Obviously a great marketing gimmick for both Xioami and China Mobile (as these are China Mobile only versions of the phone), but what a great way for a young company to show their appreciation to their fans (some of whom promptly sold their new phones at high mark ups on the street!).

Man man… Xiaomi are massive risk takers! First, they sell phones at a loss for more than a year, and now giving away free phones! Kudos to them.

PS: More than getting myself a free phone, I’d so LOVE to cover one of these events myself! Lucky you, Andi!

On second thoughts, Xiaomi’s marketing strategies seem to have come from none other than Google.

Now I believe that the crappy internet connectivity was a conspiracy to put many a blogger off… so they could save on a lot of red rice.
