UMi have published full specificationdetails of their phablet which they have announced will go in to production and will be available in limited number ahead of the coming October holidays.

The Cross is a 6.44-inch phablet with a resolution of 1920 x 1080, 1.5Ghz quad-core MT6589T processor, 2GB RAM and 4180mAh battery. It also boasts a Yamaha amplifier, OTG, dual SIM, 13 mega-pixel rear camera and 8 mega-pixel front.

Look I’m tired of screen bigots screaming that anything larger than an iPhone 5 is an abomination in the eyes of God. So if that’s your only comment, please consider it said, and don’t add it again yourself.
Now to the real issues:
1) If you’re going to put a big screen is a phone, you better make sure that you don’t waste ANY space on an unneeded bezel.
2) The fascination with thinness is not driven by need, it’s a MISTAKE that manufactures continue to perpetuate. Given a choice of whether to add 1000mAh to the battery or have the phone be 0.2mm thinner, I’d take about 0.001ns to decide to increase the battery. Yet, this is a debate that would rage on for weeks at Sony, HTC, or Samsung. Rediculous!
3) As much as I like the great advances in this generation of Chinese phones, there are 2 things holding the devices back. And both are Mediatek issues:
(1) No LTE support for the MT6589T.
(2) Mediatek won’t release their Android kernel code to the AOSP. So basically NO CM10.2, AOKP, PA, or any other open source builds for any Mediatek based phones. This seems like a stupid move for a company that’s done so well democratizing Android smartphone manufacturing.
To be clear, I’m not against ANY size screen. I’m just against people campaigning to discourage manufacturers from building EVERYTHING and letting people decide from themselves by actually BUYING the devices.
That’s why I hate comments like, “But 6.44inch too big for me…”. There are a dozen factors in choosing a phone, yet the author of this quote chose to say, “MAKE IT SMALLER OR ELSE!” to the manufacturer.
But nobody manufactures small phones so the screen size is a problem.
Also I would take the thinner model because it is not only thinner but also the weight is much less! I know that because i had the jiayu g4 with 1850 mah anf 3000 mah and i definitly like the 1850mAh model more.
Furthermore the MTK6589 is an budget SoC you can not expect LTE on a budget SoC now. Maybe next SoC Generation.
The kernel is a big problem.
I think an other problem is the quality of the DSP – i think they should improve it.
Hmmm. I’ll address your points one at a time:
1) Apple ONLY makes small screen phones. And while they don’t have huge press launches, Samsung continues to offer 4.3″ phones, and while I’ll admit that these “smaller” phone are also in other ways cost reduced, we weren’t comparing against Snapdragon 800 devices to begin with.
2) Yes, you’re correct, it weighs more to have a bigger battery. But for 90% of us, current smartphones don’t last a full day on a single charge. Requiring a larger battery is a just something that can’t be avoided.
3) Mediatek doesn’t think they’re a budget provider. They think they’re an “up and coming” challenger to Qualcomm. They’re had LTE on their roadmap for over a year, and they’re actually LATE releasing it. They current crop of “turbo” quad-core chips from them SHOULD have had LTE as an option, but they just didn’t get it ready in time.
4) Yes. Agreed. Message to Mediatek about their open source policies: see “finger”, see “ass”, please remove it.
