First look – JiaYu S2 photos and specifications

JiaYu usually start each year with a newflagship smartphone, 2014 will be no different and will be the year the ultra-slim, stainless steel JiaYu 2S launches. Photos and specifications here.

This is not the first time we have seen a JiaYu S2, we had a quick look at a prototype mid-way through last year, but this is the first time we have seen a functioning S2 model. The S2 will be the second ’S’ series phone from JiaYu, but where as the JiaYu S1 has a Snapdragon 600 processor, the JiaYu S2 is getting one of Mediatek’s 8-core solutions, currently it is the MT6592 processor, but this could change.

Like the S1 the S2 has a 5-inch 1920 x 1080 display and 13 mega-pixel camera, it also has an 8 mega-pixel front, 2000mAh battery and measures just 6mm thick with an ultra-narrow 1.7mm bezel. Dimensions of the S2 are 139 x 67 x 6mm.

We also expect to see a micro SD card slot, dual-sim support (although the prototype we saw did have this), NFC, Wireless charging, and hopefully a MT6595 chipset which would give the new JiaYu 4G LTE connectivity.

Nice! If they put in a good battery and the new 8-core MTK chip (2Ghz, 4G) then this will probably be the phone I will get. (if the price is right ofcourse.)

  Yes hopefully put in a bigger battery. Still waiting to see how the Umi X3 turns out.

If it’s trully 1.7 mm bezel (!) then the width of the phone would be 66mm, either that or in reality it’s a 5.1 incher. Both -if true- are impressive. Now if only it was not as tall I would had bought it in a heartbeat.
I mean Xperia ZL is also a 5 incher but only 131mm. Now imagine a 5 inch phone at 131x66x7mm (it doesn’t need to be as low as 6mm). That’s almost as small as the 4.3 incher galaxy s2, housing 1/3rd more screen estate. But for the time being it’s only a dream, maybe in a generation or two.
Still I dig how compact jiayu phones are considering the competition. They seem to care how a phone not only feels but also handles in the long run. Everybody else is trying to make a phone that looks like a phablet…

  1.7mm is the “bezel” of the screen assembly. You need to add that nice thick metal frame to get the true width. Still, why let reality get in the way of an attractively massaged specification sheet?

    are you saying the metal frame not count as bezel? but but do you ever had experience in smartphone before that not all bezel count as bezel?
    tcl hero has 1,95mm of bezel and it’s really impressive and not only screen assembly but everything on the side count and it is really 1,95mm

This new thinness obsession by JiaYu is messing with the battery capacity.Though I love the metallic design,am still waiting for the G4 Octa and WCDMA G2F. Those phones have exceptional battery life for their prices.

  They should stop using iPhone as their benchmark & direction (thinness & etc). Battery life (big big battery) should be the No.1 priority, next to quality screen, camera & processor. Thin profile is useless!!

I think Jiayu should give this metal body phones a new series name. Both G5 and S2 should actually named Jiayu Full Metal Series. Like Full Metal FM1, FM2 etc.
