Chances are that you might already have come across this wily fabricator from Taiwan, MediaTek, best known for producing inexpensive chipsets for entry-level to mid-range devices. Coincidentally, many of the devices that we discuss here at GizChina happen to fall in either of the two aforementioned segments.
MediaTek has been a go-to solution for not only Chinese devices, but innumerable others from emerging markets of the world. Now that the company has some significant hold in the market share, it is trying out some new tech. Having said that, it is important to mention that MediaTek chipsets remain to be cheaper than its competitors, biggest among which is Qualcomm.
MediaTek trivia
- Among the firstchipset manufacturers to offer a true octa-core mobile chipset
- Among the first to offer an ARM Cortex A7 based quad-core processor
- 10%+ market share overall, closing in on Apple
- Announced 64-bit processors at the MWC 2014
- Features 4G LTE, Wireless Charging, Fast Charging, Hot Knot (NFC rival)
- Clientele from JiaYu to Sony
We happened to stumble upon the MediaTek website, which looks to have been redesigned with a flatter, ‘westernized’ UI. Not only that, MediaTek seem to have ditched their iconic logo for a new one, again flat, but monotone.

Not only that, the Taiwanese giant also has a new slogan – Everyday Genius.
The company showed off some impressive tech at the Mobile World Congress, which included their MT6595 chipset, which works on the big.LITTLE architecture and packs 2 sets of quad-core processors. However, the processor is also capable of running all 8 cores simultaneously which gives MediaTek an upper hand. Not only that, the MT6595 spells the perfect recipe for disaster when rival companies are concerned; there’s the elusive on-board LTE connectivity, something which left consumers wanting for quite some time.

MediaTek also unveiled features like wireless charging and fast charging, which add quite a bit of value to their existing projects. No wonder, major brands in Sony, HTC, etc. are now looking at MediaTek as a viable option for their smartphones.
With so much growth in not a lot of time, MediaTek are well on their way to being the next Qualcomm, or so we think. One thing that the company will have to take care of is their brand image, which needs change. Most still think of MediaTek as only cheap and inefficient, but no ones at blame. Even the greatest of companies have humble beginnings!
That’s all well and good, but where is Android 4.4.2 KitKat?! I don’t care for which SOC they release it, just as long as they do it soon!
