Video: ColorOS 2.0 Beta on the Oppo Find 7

Here in China, early adopters of the Oppo Find 7 were treated to a Beta version of Color OS 2.0 to try out on their new phones. Here is a hands on video with ColorOS 2.0 highlighting some of the new features.

ColorOS 2.0 Beta brings some new styles, ideas and animations to Oppo’s own custom Android ROM. The main area they have really added thought is in the functions departments. There are now gestures to open the camera in any app, new pre made drawn gestures, and even a new O Sense “Sky Gestures” way to interact with your phone.

ColorOS 2.0 lock screen

The changes begin at the lock screen in Color OS 2.0. The set up is similar to the lock screen on Flyme found on Meizu phones and you simply slide the screen up to unlock. If you have messages waiting to be read icons will appear (WeChat, Email, SMS) and you can swipe directly in to those apps.

Also from the lock screen a swipe from the right edge of the screen will open the camera app, while a swipe to the left brings up a widget area waiting to be customised.

ColorOS 2.0 Homescreen

The home screen remains almost identical to previous versions, with just a few new icons for built-in applications. The Exclusive Space and Live Weather areas area also still on the system and seem unchanged also.

The notification panel in Color OS 2.0 is now transparent which looks much better, and the gesture control panel is now located at the bottom of the display.

Swiping up from just below the app dock will bring up a gesture control panel which takes up around half the screen. After using gestures for a while the system will learn which you use the most and even create icon shortcuts for them.

ColorOS 2.0 Sky Gestures

Sky Gestures are all new for ColorOS 2.0 and require the user to write a gesture in the air with their device to launch an app. The idea is quite cool, but I am not sure how many Oppo owners are going to be happy to wave their phone around when a simple on screen gesture has the same effect.

I plan to use ColorOS 2.0 Beta as my daily ROM, and will keep you informed of any other new features or updates which appear of time. If you feel like trying ColorOS 2.0 out you can take a look on the official Chinese Oppo forums (link below), but be sure to double-check that the new ROM will work with your Oppo device and ensure that it will not affect carrier operator support.

so what about the android version? still 4.3?
i think many will be awaiting 4.4 for color os 2.0, i hope they don’t dissappoint

  Yep, still 4.3. CyanogenMod or Omni ROM would be greatly appreciated on this phone. I’m really not enjoying Color OS all that much.

    i thought so.. switching from 4.3 to 4.4 might be to much of a hassle for oppo since their focus on development seems prioritised in “innovative” apps to stand up with the competition
    i’m glad omni rom exists, it’s my favorite rom so far and i’ll gladly use it on a find 7 if it features all the important stuff like superzoom and maxxaudio, dirac hd

      But thats exactly the point. Look at the find5, omni is great but the pictures taken with Omni compared to ColorOS Camera are just bad. I I expect the same for the f7 🙁

        This is why Oppo should release the camera as a stand alone app.
        I don’t think it’s Oppo’s intention to hold the app hostage in an attempt to force you to use ColorOS. Well, probably not their intention… 😉

Would be nice to see Flip tiles in the notification center like on omni. Very useful. I actually do not care 4.4 so much as long as they got the battery drain in 4.3 finaly solved.
I for my self switched back to color OS on my find5 recently. The good thing is that it offers some great features under the hood, like the app protection or data savings but there are alot of things which need to be reworked. Especially in the launcher. But luckily on android you are free to chosse what launcher you like.
All this Geasture things are nonsens in my eyes. The delay is still to high and I’m most time quicker if I use the quick shortcut on the lockscreen. The most Important thing holding me on color OS is the native Camera App. Pictures taken by the cam in omnirom aren’t quite as good as the stock camera app in color OS.
Btw. eager waiting for your full review of the F7A, I’m very interested in battery performance. Because I actually do not need the QHD Display, I instead choose the HD Display (which still seems pretty good) and have some more freedem on the battery lifetime 🙂

I really don’t understand their motivations by spending development resources on the “shell”.
Oppo has done a great job on some of their apps. But by modifying the shell and launcher, they can’t keep up Google on Android releases.
What they should do is decouple the launcher and other apps from Color, switch to CM11. Then they should have give their customers the option of the “Color Experience” (layered on top of CM) or “stock” CM11. Or customers could add Oppo exclusive apps that only work on Oppo devices (like their camera app).
This would be a “best of both worlds” solution that would let them add value, take the pressure off them to keep up with Google, and still offer the customers the best OS underpinnings available.

    Considering that Oppo has already decided to differentiate themselves with official support for CM, I’m not so sure.
    They could just have the OS be CM11, then during initial setup, they would popup a dialog that asks: (1) Install Oppo Color Experience (2) Stock CM Android (3) Advanced Options. The Advanced options would let you choice features individually.
    If they did this, they would get 95% of what the wanted while ALWAYS being on the button for the most recent version of Android.
    Hell, they could even have the first choice say, “(1) Install Oppo Color Experience (Recommended)” 😉

      i think that it is also due to their global advance they made through the last years… they sure have to learn how to handle it appropiately and find compromises for both worlds, the eastern and western mobile handheld markets since they are fairly new into mobile phones, since 2008 to be exact.. they are seeking for new branches to develop enthusiasm for as it seems, like they just announced their first and high end orthodynamic headphone, which will be also priced relatively aggressive by rumors.
      if you take in account that they have experience in how to serve high end markets like bluray players then you can maybe guess how this will expand in the mobile sector, maybe we will see even greater heights than now. i’m very excited what oppo will be in 20 years

        i’m not andy but i would say its worth it if you are not enthusiastic about having the latest version. color os 2.0 seems good in its way but will probably receive an update to kitkat later on because google has new policies and terms stated/updated, which prohibits android devicemakercompanies to use the playstore unless you use the latest version of android until a specific time roaming
