Smartphone specifications, these days, are moving ahead at a rate which is making it tough for consumers to follow. We daresay that it is the exploding market which is dictating what we get, as opposed to consumers demands forcing manufacturers to develop products as per their needs.
What’s makes me contemplate is the fact that ZTE’s next big thing, the ZTE Grand S II might feature a 4GB RAM variant. Yes, you heard it right — 4 gigs of RAM on a smartphone. It’s quite certainly going to pack a Snapdragon 801 chipset to go with the large RAM quantity, among other hardware. In fact, if you remember, we even spent some hands on time with the device at the MWC sometime back.
Gizchina News of the week
Thanks to a Tenaa listing, we have better insight on this smartphone (which, honestly, has been in the news for quite long). While it may not be a feature on every ZTE Grand S II variant, but 4GB is some serious RAM. As pointed out by Steve Dent on engadget, 4GB is the maximum RAM a 32-bit chip can handle (2^32).
With ZTE having showcased the device previously, we now await official availability before this can be confirmed.
I don’t think 4GB of RAM is a requirement, at least not for me. Any serious multitaskers here, who think they’d require the services of a 4GB RAM chip? Let us know in the comments section below.
“4GB is the maximum RAM a 32-bit chip can handle (2^32).”
You are ignoring the fact, that 32 bit Cortex A-9 SoCs and its derivatives, like f.e. Qualcomm’s Krait, already since quite a long time, utilise PAE, therefore allowing access to a total of 2^40 Byte of RAM.
The 4GB limit is only per process, which on a smartphone/phablet is nothing to worry about in the foreseeable future.
That amount of addressable memory certainly will do for 32bit SoCs for quite a few more years to come.
“The 4GB limit is only per process, which on a smartphone/phablet is nothing to worry about”
base on your own statement it has same meaning with 4GB is the maximum RAM a 32-bit chip can handle, you just bragging your ability to read wikipedia.
So, you are seriously trying to tell me, that the whole Android OS, including all launched apps, spread over up to 4 cores, is running in a single process?
Where did you get that wisdom from?
Two people arguing about how much RAM can be stuffed in a phone, while the article is asking whether 4GB of RAM is needed on a phone. Yup, I’m on the internet alright.
i’m not arguing, that ostentatious guy think he know everything
Just FYI, the topic here was: how much RAM can be addressed by a 32-bit ARM SoC, like Cortex A-9, A-12, A-17, A-15.
And that changes what? The question is- Is 4GB of RAM needed in a smartphone? Yes or no? Maybe give your thoughts on WHY you made your choice?
Sometimes one thinks lots of RAM extravegance like 4 Gb might also be part of sales hype- just to give some USP for ads..
I thought the maximum RAM a 32 bits Android could manage was 3GB…
