Over the past few months it has been rumoured that Meizu are working on a low-cost smartphone running a Mediatek chipset.
Meizu, known for producing premium smartphones, are a long time partner of Samsung. This allows Meizu to make use of Samsung processors, which it has since the launch of the M9 up to the most recent MX3 with octacore Exynos chip.
While the partnership has its perks it has also meant that it is becoming increasingly tricky for Meizu to enter the 4G LTE smartphone market (Samsung don’t currently have an LTE processor), meaning they have had to look elsewhere. Naturally a deal with Qualcomm would the logical step, but no such deal has been forged, however links with Mediatek have been rumoured.
Gizchina News of the week
Apparently one of Meizu’s next phones could be a device running an octacore MT6595 chipset with 4G LTE, the launch of which might also be the first time a Meizu device goes on sale for less than 1000 Yuan ($160).
The rumours are still just that and should be taken with a pinch of salt, but questions still remain. If Mediatek is provided processor for an affordable device who is going to be the partner for the MX4? Also, will a Mediatek powered Meizu mean we will start to see Flyme on other smartphones in the future? What are your thoughts?
