While everyone was focused, rightly so, on all those device reveals yesterday, Oppo somewhat quietly released the Oppo R1S, on sale at Oppo’s site right now for.
The Oppo R1S is, obviously, an upgrade over the original Oppo R1. Rather than just beefing up a few specs however, the R1S switches chip manufacturers, from MediaTek’s 1.3Ghz quad-core Mediatek MT6582 to Qualcomm’s 1.6 Ghz Snapdragon 400 chipset. The main camera has also been upgraded from 8MP to 13MP and as you would expect in a higher end phone created in 2014, it has 4G capabilities.
Gizchina News of the week
The rest of the specs remain largely unchanged. Same 1GB of RAM, same 5-inch 1280 x 720 screen, same 16GB of storage, same 2410mAh battery and same 7.1mm thickness. It is that RAM and resolution that will likely give some people pause however, considering the 2498 RMB price ($401 , €287) for comparison, the Oppo Find 7a, which has 2GB of RAM, Snapdragon 801 and a 5.5 inch 1920 x 1080 screen only costs about 500 RMB more than the R1S ($80, €57).
Also of note, the Oppo Find 5, Oppo’s last generation flagship phone, saw a 400 RMB price cut, dropping to 2598 RMB, or a mere 100 RMB more than the R1S, despite having 2GB of RAM, a 5-inch 1920 x 1080 screen and a 1.5Ghz CPU, although it does lack 4G capabilities.
Do you find the price point of the R1S a little curious?
