The lucky S.O.B.s over at Gizchina.it got their hands the highly anticipated 5.7 inch iOcean X8 phablet, and they decided to take photos of it along side the device most say it draws its inspiration from, Sony’s Xperia Z1.
While no one would call the iOcean a “clone” of the Xperia Z1 (The X8’s screen is nearly an inch larger) the similarities of the two devices’ design make it appear that iOcean grabbed at least some of the inspiration for the device from Sony’s.
Here, we can see the similarities of the two devices’ design. The key differences other than size include iOcean not putting its logo on the front of its device and the flash for each device being positioned in a different place. They both feature the rounded corners and metallic sides, they both heavily feature black, and even their cameras look similar, save for the aforementioned flash position.
According to Matthew Vein of Gizchina.it, the two devices seem to be made out of a similar material, and the glass reflects off both devices in a similar way.
Gizchina News of the week
Internally there are some significant differences. The iOcean X8 sports a MediaTek Octa-Core CPU clocked at 1.7Ghz while Sony’s Xperia Z1 contains the Snapdragon 800 quad-core CPU clocked at 2.2Ghz. It is worth noting the GPU in MediaTek’s chip is the Mali-450, clocked at 700Mhz, while the Snapdragon 800 contains the 400Mhz Adreno 330. Despite their differences, the two chips are fairly comparable in performance.
So the largest difference remains the most obvious one, the size. The X8 can’t be called a clone, but it wouldn’t be too far off to call it an enlargement of the Sony Xperia Z1.
