The Aliyun OS looked promising coming out of the gate. It had Acer on board, the bankroll Chinese tech giant Alibaba and a heavy emphasis on cloud computing. Then, Google told Acer if they made an Aliyun OS phone, they would lose their seat at the Open Handset Alliance lunch table. Google also questioned the status of the OS, implying that it was an illegal fork on Android.
The confusion about Aliyun OS still remains. Is it a fork of Android? A fork of Linux? Is it distributed in a legal way? Years after its initial release and spin-off from Alibaba itself, many questions remain unanswered.
Gizchina News of the week
If you want to take it for a spin yourself, Newman is giving you the opportunity. The Newman K3 is essentially Newman’s newest phone, the Newman K18, with the controversial OS, rather than Android, installed on the device. That means, it has the same 5-inch 1080p Screen, the same 1.7Ghz Octa-core CPU, 2GB of RAM, 16 or 32GB of expandable storage, a 13 MP main shooter and a 5MP front facing camera.
The Newman K3 also has nearly the same dimensions as the K18, including the device’s 6.17mm thickness. Like the K18, it is also 144mm long and is just a tad wider, sitting at 69.9mm, 0.3mm wider than the K18.
Despite reports to the contrary, Newman’s site does not currently list the K3, but reports indicate that it will go on sale for somewhere around 1699RMB ($272, €199).
