The Chinese tablet scene simply isn’t developed as the phone scene. While there are plenty of phones made in China that I would put up against the best efforts by Samsung, HTC, Sony or LG, the same can not be said about tablets. There are plenty of options out there, but few of them come close to touching Google’s Nexus line of low-cost high-powered tablets.
That might change with Xiaomi’s MiPad, but in the meantime Chuwi is putting out a budget tablet that brings roughly the same power as the original Nexus 7 but at about half the price.
The Chuwi VX8 has an 8-inch screen and a 1280 x 800 screen, 1GB of RAM, a 1.3Ghz MediaTek MT8127 CPU, 8GB of storage, a 2 megapixel front facing camera and a 3 megapixel back camera and a 4,000mAh battery.

For comparison, the Nexus 7 2012 launched with a 7-inch 1280 x 800 screen, 1GB of RAM, a 1.3Ghz quad-core Tegra 3 CPU, started at 8GB of storage, had a single 1.2 megapixel camera and a 4,325mAh battery. It debuted at $199 in 2012 and is still sold for over $119 on eBay used.
The Chuwi VX8 is reported to cost no more than ¥499 ($80, €60) so it doesn’t appear to be a halfbad value. The VX8 also has your usual assortment of connections (WiFi, GPS, NFC) but of note is its Bluetooth 4.0 capabilities and HDMI/OTG capabilities. It also ships with Android 4.4.
Does the VX8 get your motor running?
