While you wait for Google to make the official announcement about the next-gen Nexus tablet (HTC made, Nexus 9… yawn), Dell just rolled out a sexy little beast out of the blue!
Extending the popular Venue 8 line, this new tablet is known as the Dell Venue 8 7840. In more ways than one, the device reminds us of the Sharp Aquos Crystal X. Why, you’re wondering? Take a look:
The device is pretty much the bomb (Pinkman style) when it’s looks you’re talking about. That’s not it, Dell’s come all guns blazing at us with an 8.4-inch 2560 x 1600 pixel display and a 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Atom Z3580 processor! The Venue 8 7840 is also pretty darn sleek with a thickness of just 6.4mm, thinner than either of the iPhones that launched a couple of days back.
Gizchina News of the week
The Venue 8 7840 has Dell pretty much covered on all aspects. Although many despise those that use their tablets to take photos, it might soon change because this baby comes with an 8 mega-pixel rear camera along with a couple more, that the tablet uses to pull off tricks such as a refocus effect (HTC M8 style), distance calculation, etc.
There’s still a couple of months before you’ll be able to purchase this looker of a tablet, but I’d wait! Oh, and it’s the world’s thinnest tablet.
I’m wondering what the price is .. and where AnTuTu will place it. If it scores at least ~35k and costs less than $300, I am pretty sure I want.
The AnTuTu Benchmark can help show a devices computing performance but not real world daily use only way to show that is to use the device it may have a crap score but run smooth it may have a good score but run slow so don’t go off benchmarks look at peoples reviews once its released that gives a more detailed impression of what you’re paying for and this applies to all mobile devices.
It’s really unclear if Antutu would matter. It would make more sense comparing the relative strength of two ARM based devices, but the intel architecture is different enough that the benchmarks probably won’t lend a lot of insight.
it is not unclear at all. it does not matter. no benchmark matters, only user experience. that said, a benchmark is somewhat useful, and a standardized benchmark definitely can be useful — it matters to me, and I am the one who is interested in spending money on the product. Now, if you are saying you’d like to donate the money to me, then sure, antutu is silly.
Haha. So I guess we’re in heated agreement.
What I was trying to point out is that antutu isn’t a great indicator of relative performance across different processor architectures. It certainly works well enough when comparing apples to apples… ummm… maybe not the best fruit analogy… But when comparing apples and oranges, the scores don’t mean much.
yea its just a disagreement on what is good enough .. even though benchmarks arent great in general, and cross-architecture comparisons even worse, they are both still somewhat accurate. it is probably safe to say that an intel system scoring <70% of some other ARM system will be outperformed by it in practice.
very intersting hardware… Quadcore Intel Atom.. 🙂 (y)
amazing tablet , but i might wait for the new m-chips
Can’t wait for a chinese company to clone it.
I did a bit of hunting around on the net, and it seems that there isn’t a lot of information about the LTE version of the device. In fact no information other than the fact that there IS an LTE version.
It will be interesting to see if the LTE device will have phone functionality (like the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4, aka the Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4). Samsung’s device WILL have a dialer and can make voice call as well as send and receive text messages.
One very encouraging note about this device is that Dell seems to have learned it’s lessons well from it’s “Streak” era. They aren’t screwing around with the software, and it early reviews say that it’s very close to stock Android. I’ve really got only one thing to say about that, “Thanks Dell!”
So, the question arises, “Would you use the Venue 8 7xxx as a big phone?” I’m not sure, but I think I just might.
LTE version due in November, WiFi only sooner.
