Want Stock Kitkat on your Xiaomi Mi3 or Mi4? You got it!

Xiaomi fans are on the fence with the new look of MIUI V6. Some might love the fresh new look while others can’t get past the iOS 7 look. But there is a new option, why not install stock Android Kitkat on your Xiaomi Mi3 or Mi4?

Owners of the current Xioami Mi4 and previous flagship Xiaomi Mi3, now have the option to install Android 4.4 Kitkat to their phones in stock form. The ROM does not appear to be an official one, but instead developed by on the MIUI forums. The AOSP version of the Android ROM was compiled using the official kernel, allowing the ROM to be as stock as possible and even offering OTA (over the air) updates.

As I have a Xiaomi Mi4 lying about here, I plan to give the ROM a go myself, but anyone installing the vanilla option before I do is encouraged to report their findings here.

I’ve tried AOSP, CM11, SlimKat and I’m planning to try LiquidSmooth and Nameless soon. So far, they’ve all been waaaaaaay smoother than MIUI 6 but have terrible random reboot problems, odd speaker distortion and the battery life is slightly unstable because of the random reboots.
There is a workaround for the random reboots in an app called Captivate Keep Alive which was originally for the Samsung Captivate. It keeps your phone from going into deep sleep, preventing random reboots. So if you’re going to try and flash a new ROM, make sure you install this app as well.
Edit: Also, the brightness slider goes from super dim to dim to super bright with nothing in between. There’s literally no normal brightness. Keep that in mind.

  Xiaomi haven’t released the kernel unfortunately. Everything is working fine though, AOKP has even fixed most if the problems in CM11.

    Ah ok, well you can do alot with a prebuilt kernel, but not as much as when you have source. Very impressive what those two guys have done with just the prebuilt kernel. C’mon Xiaomi release the damn code, it’s GPL!
