2nd Generation OnePlus phone will run OnePlus ROM out of the box

The OnePlus One has been a roaring success and so a 2nd generation phone is on the cards, with it’s own OnePlus developed ROM.

In an interview with Chinese tech sites speaking about the impact of the OnePlus One on the phone market, Pete Lau CEO of OnePlus also spoke about what is in the future of the Oppo funded company.

Lau confirmed reports that OnePlus are building their own ROM development division to create a OnePlus Android ROM (Android+ ?) and went on to say the the 2nd generation OnePlus smartphone would ship with that ROM.

Currently the Chinese version of the OnePlus One comes with Oppo’s ColorOS, while the international model has CyanogenMod as standard. The development of their own ROM would help the brand to further distance themselves from Oppo, and would allow them more freedom. It is unclear if the new ROM would see the end of CyanogenMod for future OnePlus devices.

The interview goes on to say that OnePlus have managed to be profitable this year, with internatoinal daily phone sales counting in the 1000’s.

This is a bold move. Plenty of people bought the phone specifically for Cyanogenmod. This company never ceases to amaze me with their boneheaded moves. I swear they have a group of monkey’s running this company.

  I am sure this move would be china only! I however also think that cyanogen could be bought by Microsoft,Yahoo or any biggies putting cm11s future at risk

I ain’t really sure it’s a good decision; most of “home” ROM are quite disliked (ColorOS, Flyme,… except maybe MIUI…), aren’t they? Why not stick to (almost) pure Android + a light customised layer?

  Something like Asus’s Zen UI would be perfect. Lightly customized version of stock with small but very useful additions.

I bought it specifically for Cyanogen and the Nexus like experience. A home-grown ROM, which would probably be buggy given their history, would keep me away.

Hmm, really. So they are profitable in their first year with all their start up costs and selling thousands of phones (as opposed to tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands)? Yes, their costs are probably lower than traditional manufacturers, but they still have costs. Are their costs really THAT low that they are profitable out of the gate? Or is there some sort of creative accounting going on here? Or am I just missing something?

  People still believe that OPO is a startup. It is not anything close. It is owned by BBK which also owns OPPO and VIVO. It is nothing but a life style brand for OPPO. Kind of like Scion is for Toyota in the US.

    Actually Opo is more like that budget flagship killer range for Oppo, similar to Huawei’s Honor series.

Don’t panic people.
They will obviously take the Oppo approach offering both Cyanogenmod and their own OS options.

    Actually, if they REALLY want to do their own ROMs, what OPO, OPPO, and VIVO should all be doing is Google Edition versions of the flagship phones.
    They really don’t understand that the best “value added” for Android is NOT to ruin what Google has done.

      I agree and disagree. Most custom versions of Android end up being horrible but some do manage to make a system that not only rivals pure Android but actually improves upon it. MIUI and Flyme both fit into this category.

      I disagree. There are times where I’d prefer just having stock, but I’d never switch FunTouch, MIUI, Sense or Zen for stock. They simply add a lot more to the device than a stock ROM ever could.

  Really? I’ve heard no mention of Cyanogenmod support from Oppo since they spun out OnePlus as a separate company.

They had to, the development on Color OS was utter crap in 2014, although it was one of the best in 2013.

The original premise of the company was that OnePlus would work on the best of breed hardware, and Cyanogenmod would provide best of breed software.
So, has OnePlus done their part? Not really.
First, there’s the hardware. They’ve shipped a good device, but did they actually do it? OnePlus shipped a cost reduced Oppo Find7. Despite all their claims of innovative design, every bit of the hardware is 100% Oppo.
Along the way they’ve tortured us with deceptive and irritating marketing stunts, unreasonable contests, and uneven handling of delivery on their promises.
Then they dropped the bomb of Color OS (Oppo’s inexplicable vanity project) for all phones sold in China. At best this was yeilding to pressure from the Mainland government, and worst, it was just a straight betrayal of all their customers that had been waiting (and holding off purchases) for 6 months while waiting for a Cyanogenmod phone.
Now, They’ve put the final nail in the coffin. There is NO reason for companies to build their own “vanity” ROMS, and absolutely no reason for OnePlus to make this move considering the relationship they have with Cyanogenmod.
I don’t understand why they don’t understand their market. The enthusiasts that bought the One did it to get cutting edge hardware running CM11 natively, not for the love of a brand that OnePlus thinks they’ve built with their irritating marketing efforts.

  Unless you live in China ColorOS is not an issue for you.
  If you bought a grey import then you could flash yourself with the download of a file. Most exporters did this for you. Mine did.
  Perhaps they are looking at their own software development as Cyanogen may not be up to par. There have been reports they were understaffed and not well prepared. Or Cyanogen no longer wish to partner with OPO i.e. they have no choice.
  I am waiting to reserve my judgment.

was considering this phone but no support for major EU 4G bands, cyanogen developed by a bunch of enthusiasts, a friend of mine got the black version and after 3 months that black stuff started to fall apart and the phone looked like it was almost a year old… so went and got an iPhone.
