Yesterday Meizu and Canonical put the final touches to their agreement which will see the two companies release an Ubuntu powered smartphone.

An Ubuntu powered Meizu has been on the cards for months now, but finally a device and launch date is in site! Yesterday, Meizu’s VP Li Nan and Canonical CEO Jane Silber, signed the final agreement which will see an Ubuntu powered Meizu MX launch in the first quarter of 2015.

The signing of the cooperation marked the end of a 2 day workshop where Meizu employees got to try Ubuntu and get to grips with the new OS. With the Meizu MX4 and MX4 Pro launched the only questions which remain are when we will see the phone and which device will get the Ubuntu touch first?

Positive: Ubuntu finally coming to the smartphone world. Negative: Ubuntu desktop capabilities will not reach the market until 2016 (hopefully around April-May) so still a long time to wait for “the real thing”. :/

Anyways, is a good start, even with the MX4 that system should be buttery smooth and can show some freshness in this Android dominated territory.
