Xiaomi’s phones aren’t the first ones to get updates to latest versions of Android. However, the MIUI team at the company have their own little thing going most of the time, which more often than not compensates for delayed Android version updates.
The latest update that a lot of the users of the Xiaomi Mi 3 and Mi 4 received today contained a very useful feature, that you might already have seen on some other phones: one-handed usage. I’m a sucker for one-handed operation, and although the 5-inch screen on my Mi 4 makes it fairly usable, there are times when I have to kind of reach for a certain section of the screen. However, thanks to the new update, it is now much easier to get to any part of the screen regardless of you being a left-hander or a right-hander.
Gizchina News of the week
To use the phone in one-handed operation mode, simply:
- swipe from home to back: to bring the screen down to the right edge
- swipe from home to overflow: to bring the screen down to the left edge
Just perform the reverse to get the phone back to normal mode. How cool is that!
There’s a lot of other updates. You can get a gist of the updates by watching the following video.

Hi Yash, I have seen on gizmochina a quick review of the MI4 black version. It seems that Xiaomi did not manage to fix the paint peeling issue with the MI4. On two pics, we can see it clearly. I am very disappointed cos I was waiting for the black version since the release of the phone a few months ago. Moreover the back cover is awful. I don’t know what to do, maybe I will go for the white version or consider another phone (MI3).
Looks to me scratches rather than peeling. It’s made from plastic so prone to get scratches.
There are lots of back replacements and those are beautiful and cheap.
It might be scratches but I invite you to check the picture below coming from gizmochina. I don’t believe that the person who did the review had the time to scratch the phone. As you can see, the black painting is clearly peeling on the aluminium body.
Why would you need one handed operation on a 5″ screen? No where near a phablet size. No one should struggle with it. I’ve previously had an iocean g7 6.4″ didn’t struggle to use it one handed.
I was thinking the exact same thing (regarding who needs a special one handed function on a 5″ screen).
However, I will give Xiaomi bonus points for not copying Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus one handed operation function and I will also give Yash bonus points for not putting “Breaking” in this news story title.
Thanks for the picture Pros. That looks like chipping indeed; the paint isn’t holding up very well with the steel I believe.
You are welcome Yash. Indeed, it seems that the black paint can peel without too much effort. I understand now why Xiaomi have taken so long to release the MI4 black version, they tried to fix that issue but didn’t managed to find the right solution. Maybe I will go for the white version or Xiaomi MI3 (might be too big) or a budget phone (Redmi 1S to wait for the right phone to be released in the market Jiayu S4?).
If you ask me, White Mi 4 is the way to go. I’ve been a happy user of that phone for a few months now.
