Breaking: Xiaomi reportedly banned from importing, selling and advertising products in India!

Big news today is that Indian customs have been directed to stop imports of Xiaomi products in to India while an ongoing complaint by Ericsson is investigated!

Xiaomi entered the Indian market this year where it quickly became the companies second largest, and most important market for the company outside of China.

However, after receiving a complaint from Ericsson over an alleged infringement of standard essential patents, the Delhi High Court has directed customs official to prevent imports of Xiaomi products in to the country. Xiaomi will also be restrained from selling and advertising their products in devices until the complaint is satisfied.

Although customs officials have been told to seize Xiaomi imports, Xiaomi India and Flipkart are still waiting for an official notice from the Delhi High Court and are working with legal teams to evaluate what exactly is going on.

Head of Xiaomi India, Manu Jain, had this to say:

While we haven’t received an official notice from the Delhi High Court, our legal team is currently evaluating the situation based on the information we have.
India is a very important market for Xiaomi and we will respond promptly as needed and in full compliance with Indian laws. Moreover, we are open to working with Ericsson to resolve this matter amicably.

Earlier this year Ericsson made a similar complaint about Indian phone maker Micromax and also Intex.

The news, obviously bad news for Xiaomi, will work in favour of both OnePlus and Vivo who launched products in the country just these past few weeks. We will keep you up to date with the latest happenings in this case.

That would be pretty ridiculous and very damaging since Xiaomi would be able to reach 1.5-2 mil units sales in Q1.

  Ericsson? WTF do they still exist? Come on these are marketing tricks to stop – stall “Xiaomi wave”. If Xiao continues to sell like this, they will reach Europe (and rest of the world) in no time and that will create a HUGE impact on already established brands.

    Um, Ericsson does not make phones. But they are HUGE in R & D, and you can be sure that a lot of patents which make smartphones possible are theirs.

More news like this will be appearing when Chinese manufacturers operate actively outside China, this is just the beginning. Apple will most likely sue them if they want to sell their phones in the US or EU market (based on an interview given by one of their designers).

Damn. It makes sense though, Ericsson are huge in R&D, and I don’t think many Indian people are very happy with the existence of Xiaomi.

      Thats the point, they are cheap and provide excellent value for money while still providing great build quality. I would not understand the reason for anyone, anywhere in the world to hate Xiaomi.

        Honestly I think they are very interesting, the devices are well built and priced very attractive. But. I do understand why they would be hated, especially by other manufacturers like Apple. The “Indian case” is just the beginning. Fortunately they are quite big manufacturer at the moment so they do have resources to redesign their devices not to be so heavily sued once they will get on European and American markets.

This only divides among the countries, We need to understand crores of Indian’s working in many countries, and we also exporting billions goods to many countries. When it is rivalry between countries, many people as to face the problems, not any fault of them. For someones mistake someone else has to pay the price and this leads to stone age.

Thank God I bought three Redmis for my friends and family from September to November. Although I am a bit disappointed that the Note is almost the same size as the Redmi, I would rather have bought the 2Gb phone itself. I was also waiting for the 4G Mi Pad.

Note to complainers:
1. Ericsson does not make phones.
2. They only do R&D and Network Equip.
3. Xiaomi leverages a lot of patents from the USA and Europe, including Ericsson’s. Which is why they never sell in those markets.
4. Ericsson only did this after Xiaomi didn’t respond to their notices. I don’t know about you, but i sure would respond to something that threatened my job.

  Have you ever tryed to get answer from a Chinese company boss?!?, whether its a generally enquiry or a complaint for faulty goods! They don’t responds!! Unless it effects their pocket i.e. you raised a dispute on PayPal. Do you know how I know this!? Its cuz am Chinese! This is how we roll ? ? ?
