Chinese chip maker Allwinner have unveiled the Allwinner A64 SoC for tablets which could bring 4K video support to devices in lower price brackets.
All winner are no stranger to bringing powerful processors to Chinese tablets, and along with Rockchips and Mediatek are the top picks of manufactures wanting to bring powerful performance and flagship features to their devices at a budget.
The new Allwinner A64 is being promoted as the most cost-effective 64bit tablet processor on the market today. The SoC boasts 4 x Cortex A53 CPU cores and supports H.265/H.64 video decoding and 4K video over HDMI to an external display. It should also be fairly future proof to judging by the fact it will support Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The real killer feature of this chipset though is the price. At only $5 a processor, Chinese tablet manufacturers have a very affordable SoC to choose when building their upcoming devices. So what’s the catch? Well although the Allwinner A64 does offer good video for the money, it doesn’t offer any 3G, 4G or GSM native support meaning manufacturers will have to come to their own solution.
