Ulefone continue to apologise, now offering fans rewards for spotting errors

Ulefone offering fans free prizes to those sporting errors with the brand, phones and promotional material.

Fans buying the Ulefone Be Pro recently learned that their new phones didn’t have the 13 mega-pixel Sony sensor which was originally claimed but instead an 8 mega-pixel Omnivision sensor. Ulefone have already apologised for the error are continuing to do so with a new promotion.

Ulefone’s apology to fans about incorrect camera specs was taken on the chin by some fans and not so well by others, so in an attempt to stop something like this from happening again the Chinese phone maker is asking for fans help.

In a new promotion which will last almost all year, Ulefone are asking fans to report errors posted in official material to them for the chance to receive a free gift. For any single error spotted, Ulefone will reward the first 3 reports with a free cover, case or some other Ulefone accessory.

It’s a clever idea from the up and coming phone maker and one which proves that they are open to criticism and want to be as honest as possible with fans. What do you guy’s think of this promotion?

I think that it’s nice. Companies open to critisism are hard to find.
Not that it will look good to them if they actually reward many people though, because basically that would mean that they have many mistakes in their official material 😛

well, mostly you will discover errors between the device and official material AFTER you bought the device.
OK, you will do the persons that are on the verge of buying the Ulephone a favor, but you yourself are stuck with a device you possibly wouldn’t have bought in the first place had you known about the error.
Hmmm.. feels strange doesn’t it?

So let me get this straight. They are essentially admitting there are more lies on their website and asking customers to point them out? Why would anyone trust anything this company says.

There’s a difference between outright lying and screwing up. If they lied, got found out, and are now running damage control, then, yeah, screw them like so many other China manufacturers who have faked the version of Android so it would sell. On the other hand, if they screwed up and are trying to fix that, then give them a break and wait to see if they can fix issues, etc.
If I had paid $300 + for this phone and didn’t get the 13mp camera I’d want a refund but, come on, for about $160 I just can’t complain.

  You should, because if they’d been truthful you’d probably only paid $140. That IMX 214 had retail value and still does, none of the resellers have altered their sales pages.

    With DHL shipping I paid $157.91 for the phone which is pretty close to your $140.
    About a year ago, when I first started looking at Chinese phones, I was pretty sure I’d have to pay close to $300 to get something decent. But in a year there have been a lot more phone offerings and prices have come down. If I was really interested in quality, then I’d only be looking at Meizu & Xiaomi but I just don’t want to pay that kind of money especially since neither of these get 4g in the U.S. The Be Pro, which I’ve just activated, gets a strong 3g signal at my house and that’s all I need. Because of what I paid for the phone, I can easily justify buying a new phone a year from now and in a year from now I expect most of the quality Chinese manufacturers will have phones that get 4g in the U.S.
    While I’ve only had the phone for about 10 days and have been using it on wifi for most of this time, I’ve had no problems with the phone. I’ve installed several apps from the playstore, including youtube, with no problem at all. However, I’m not a techie so basically all I care about is for the phone to work with voice and text messaging. I haven’t taken that many pictures but really the camera seems okay to me.

      @Owsley_66:disqus Hey I have a couple of question for you since you mentioned that you also live here in the U.S. Which company did you active the phone with? I just ordered this phone but I’ve been told that even that the advertise says 4G, it wont get 4G in the country because the bands they work with in China are different than the ones we have here. Have you experienced any with the phone problem so far?

Too bad because I’ve ordered this phone. Still phone is cheap but not good if they deliberately lied about it. Surely they have a lot of damage control to do.

Making a minor typo in the dimensions is one thing, but to get a key selling point wrong — in promotional advertising creatives whose main goal is to get you to BUY, no less — is a whole different thing altogether. I’ve worked in marketing before, and all I can say is that the amount of incompetence it takes for something like this to happen is mind-boggling. I’m not sure how it works in China, but in most Western countries a marketing campaign usually goes through many rounds of auditing before it gets approved for launch, so if something of this magnitude were to happen you can be sure the company will get royally screwed with a class action suit and the person responsible for this promo would be so fired you can see smoke coming out of their arse. On one hand, it’s really hard for me to believe that this was an honest mistake; on the other hand, it’s equally hard for me to believe that they thought they could get away with a flat-out scam like this, which means it might really be an honest but mind-bogglingly stupid mistake. Neither case makes Ulefone look good, especially if they’re a new company out to make a good first impression. Good luck with the damage control.
