Want a high-end Ubuntu device now? Then why not install Ubuntu Touch on the OnePlus One

Ubuntu for phones has been shown off by BQ and at MWC Meizu will show the MX4, but what if you want Ubuntu Touch right now? Well if you have a OnePlus One then you are in luck.

Thanks to the development efforts of Ubuntu fans, owners of the OnePlus One can now install Ubuntu Touch on their 2014 Flagship Killer. Before you do go out and try this though be aware that a few very important features don’t work at the moment including the camera, data, WIFI and Bluetooth. If you are feeling brave though the video below will talk you through the install process.

We’re sure that plenty of Ubuntu fans are going to want to try this out and all those missing features will be added in future updates. For those of you wanting a high-end Ubuntu device but don’t want to risk your OPO then you will want to wait for the Meizu MX4 Ubuntu to launch next week.

Wow! I swear the development for this went completely under the radar! I’m sure I looked at the thread over at XDA about a week ago and there was no ‘decent’ movement on it…
I’ll deffo give it a go if they get it working with MultiROM, I need my OPO as a daily driver too much to go flashing stuff that’s in dev…

Used it on my Nexus 4 before Android 5.0 was released. I loved the way I kept getting updates, unlike Android where you’re at the mercy of the smartphone vendor. For example, my Z Ultra MIGHT get the 5.0 update/upgrade in July, which is complete nonsense.
It’s time consumers start refusing to buy new phones released with older android firmware.

  Even OnePlus promised they’d release 5.0 90 days after the official Lollipop release… and we’ll have to wait (hopefully!) one more month.
  I’m not sure whether Canonical will be able to keep THE LOT of devices out there updated (if someday they port to Android devices!), but they won’t probably do worse than Google + hardware makers.

      Big difference, I know. Ubuntu Touch by now is only running in a few devices, being the BQ one the first to launch with it in exclusive. Soon Meizu will join… I’m so excited because it is a totally new scenario: ‘scopes’ over apps, gestures over buttons (similar to other systems, like Sailfish)… I must admit I’m even a little worried about myself using it, not sure if it will be too much difference coming from Android.
      To end, I really want Meizu to launch the Ubuntu Edge with 2016 tech… That, with total desktop capabilities and the ability to run Android apps (unfortunately not available through Play Store), would make the device pretty interesting.

        It’s very different from Android. I had a triple boot set up on my Nexus for several months, and the two others (Ubuntu and FF) were very different from Android. But Ubuntu touch is slightly similar to BB 10.

        I believe Sailfish OS has that ability (correct me if I’m wrong), so I wouldn’t be surprised to see the same in Ubuntu (both are GNU/Linux systems).

        Sailfish and BB 10 can, and so can Tizen and others. I thought Ubuntu was a bit different though, we’ll see.

Truth is that Ubuntu sucks as it uses libhybris which is basicaly wrap around bionicallib c lib for gnu libc. There is no true open source there and no joy of many distros and oppenes which drives server world.
