Cube i7 CM comes with Ubuntu installed as standard

Tablet maker Cube have just sent over the specifications of their latest tablet model which surprisingly comes with Ubuntu OS installed as standard.

Cube have been a favourite Chinese tablet maker for years now. They sprung to fame with their range of Android tablets and used their expertise to make some interesting Windows tablet devices too.

Their upcoming model, the Cube i7 CM is a surprise though as it ditches Windows and Android in favour of Ubuntu as standard.

Measuring in at 11.6-inch the tablet has a FHD 1920 x 1080 resolution, 2GHz Intel Core M processor, 4GB RAM and 64GB of SSD flash memory. It’s also very impressive to see dual speakers, built-in SD card support and even native 3G connectivity from the tablet. Cube also say if you don’t fancy Ubuntu the tablet will also support Windows 8.

Cube will be launching the Ubuntu powered Cube i7 CM on April 5th though Aliexpress at a promotional price of $399. No work on the link to the store or what the regular retail price might be.

Now this is good news. I’ll buy this if I can dual boot Ubuntu and Windows.

Ouch expensive! Can get dual boot tablets with similar specs for less than half the price, they must be smoking some good stuff if they think $400 is a good price!

Well sure Core M is a good CPU but I don’t really thing a Chinese tablet is worth $400 … For around $600 I can get an Ultrabook based on this CPU ( from Asus too )

Well this is actually x86_64 pc without keyboard. If there is removable sata ssd and normal bios (that can disable secure boot crap) inside i would buy it as portable device.

If it only had an N-trig screen it would put the Surface 3 to shame.

Now they got my attention… I’ll have a look at this machine, nice and better than buying a netbook-like laptop, if you get a keyboard to work.

Assuming that this version of Ubuntu is going to be the stock Ubuntu with no customization, then the thing about Ubuntu vs Android is that Ubuntu is updated constantly. No need to wait for someone to update a ROM before updating the OS.
This is going to be the Ubuntu Touch version and since it is going to offer 3G then this is going to be the same version for Ubuntu phones so would be completely compatible with the phone and then completely compatible with desktop Ubuntu.
The Windows version has HDMI and a keyboard plug in and so should the Ubuntu version so this would be an interesting tablet as it could obviate the need of a desktop computer and with 3G and a headset you wouldn’t need a phone.
At first I thought the price was a little high but with all the things this is capable of doing I think it’s probably a decent price.
Edit: According to Cube’s website, only 100 units sold at the $399 price. Then goes up to over $500 to almost $900. Good luck with that.
