Philips really want to be noticed in the smartphone space, and hence the Philips i999

An all-new Philips phone just got certified over at TENAA. This new phone is in stark contrast to what we’ve seen from the company previously, at least in the smartphone segment.

The Philips i999 as it is known, is one powerful phone. It comes with a 5.5-inch display with a massive 2K (QHD/1440p) resolution, a first for the company. When a phone ships with a display like that, it is evident the company wants you to take their phone seriously. In this case, it holds greater importance, because no one really has taken Philips phones very seriously.

Coming back to the device, the i999, it has a 2.5GHz quad-core processor of unspecified make (presumably the Snapdragon 801?), 3GB of RAM and 32GB of on-board storage. It will also have an 8 mega-pixel snapper on the front, and a massive 20 mega-pixel sensor with dual tone, dual LED flash on the rear.

The device will be impressively thin at 8.2mm, with overall dimensions being 153 x 76 x 8.2mm. That’s not it, the phone will also have a fingerprint scanner built in, which if I’m not wrong, will be a first for Philips.

So what do you think of this new upcoming device? I think this is the first time a Philips product is making me excited (after the light bulb of course)…

  They are distributed in my part of Europe through select vendors, but the 2 or 3 devices they have are crap.

It’s not really Philips, just some Chinese manufacturer selling under the Philips brand. Like with TP vision (TV’s), audio and video (Funai) and the (recently sold) LED division.
Philips is selling their brand and gets a % of the revenue in return.

the pure ugliness of the phone puts me off, but if it was 64bit and at a cheap price i would consider, but i’m talking asus pricing stucture

  You would consider an ugly phone just because it is 64 bit? 64 bit will eventually be a major advantage but as of today its benefits are negligible. It will take at least 1-2 years for 64 bit to be fully optimized. Right now it is mostly fluff and marketing, and great marketing at that.

    The new 64 bit ARMv8 chips are faster than their old 32 bit ARMv7 counterparts, so the benefit is still tangible. But yes not sure why you would call an internal specification ugly

      Most all new chips are faster than the older counterparts regardless of whether they are 32 or 64 bit.

      i didnt call an internal hardware ugly, the phone is an ugly looking thing, i was meerly poining out the the addition of a 64bit chip over a 32bit chip would be more appealing and allow me to see past the ugly ass exterior of the phone

    nope i would consider an ugly phone if it was dirt cheap and had all the ticks, 64bit chip, 3gb+ram, 32gb+rom, sd expansion slot, 5.5″+ fhd, i have been looking for a phone for months and still can’t pick one as i would like it for long period of time, so if im intending on keeping it for a couple of years i would like to atleast know the hardware is still relevant.

      The Jiayu S3 has all of those for a dirt cheap price and it isn’t ugly.

  Since these phones are just from a Chinese OEM, they don’t share the same design ofcourse. And there’s basically nothing left of the consumer electronics division of PHILIPS. It’s all be sold off.

    Phillips sold off the TV’s, DVD/Blu Ray, Smartphones and Audio divisions, they are all made under license now. Phillips still makes small appliances like hair dryers and toasters, the major segment for Phillips has actually shifted to health care.

Does it come with free pack of LED light bulbs? Phillips is my favorite lightbulb company.
The design is just so bland and knowing Phillips it will be incredibly overpriced.

        Sorry I should have been more clear. What he meant was they were cheap as in they overcharge for everything but when it comes to employees they are very cheap, refuse to pay for basic amenities, fight with employees over the smallest of things such as having more than one coffee (which Phillips provides) a day.

The Mobile phone division was sold to China Electronics Corporation (CEC) way back in 2007, but as per the agreement Philips has allowed CEC to use philips brand.
One of their best phones is the Xenium range, I have their Phone X1560 (if i am not wrong), it is so called “dumb phone”
Dual sim dual standby with standby time about 2400 hours, with battery of 2900 mAh
It also has a USB slot which you can use to charge your SMART PHONE.

It all rests on the pricing, I actually like the more bulkier look of the phone, we all know that the display will be great and I don`t need more than S801 really. Although I guess it would be too much to as for 250-299$ pricing.
