Coolpad to set up R&D and manufacturing unit in India

In India, Coolpad is known for making what Micromax sells under the name of Yu Yureka. This indirect relation with the Indian market might soon change for Coolpad.

Coolpad Groups announced today that the company would be manufacturing and selling its phones in India, following the likes of innumerable Chinese phones that have landed in the country in the past year or so. This includes Gionee, OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi, Meizu and more… and by the looks of it, the list will have many more names by the end of this 2015.

In the past, Coolpad did sell its phones in India, but in partnership with Indian vendor Spice. The phones went under the brand name ‘Spice Coolpad’.

Li Wang, Chief Operating Officer, Coolpad Dazen

To head the India operations, Coolpad have roped in Varun Sharma, ex-Flipkart director. Sharma will be assuming the post of of India CEO for Coolpad.

Xiaomi’s online-only model has worked wonders for the company. Xiaomi too took to online marketing guru Manu Jain (of Jabong) to head its India operations, and it appears Coolpad already have a recipe in front of them.
