Oukitel U8 looks like a P7000 sans steroids; On limited sale for $139.99

Like it or hate it, it is nearly impossible to ignore the Elephone P7000. The phone has been making waves even before landing in users’ hands, and here we are, comparing it to another phone that looks equally worthy of the money… at least on paper.

We’ve spoken about the Oukitel U8 before. If you didn’t happen to be around then, here’s what the U8 is all about: the phone also known as the ‘Universe Tap’, and as you might have already guessed, it comes with a ‘touch’ fingerprint sensor (as opposed to a swipe based one).

The U8 also runs on a MediaTek MT6735 quad-core processor, has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of on-board storage. Very much like the Ulefone Be Touch, the phone has a 2.5D curved glass over the 5.5-inch HD that should give it a rather premium look and feel. Besides that, the U8 comes with a 13 mega-pixel rear camera, a 5 mega-pixel front camera and a 2850mAh battery.

Two of the most interesting things about the phone (apart from the price, which I’m coming to in a bit) happen to be the fact that it runs Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box (much like the Elephone G9, which coincidentally or not has the same processor) and the ‘tap’ fingerprint sensor. If not lot is lost to translation, one tap should unlock the phone, as opposed to two that phones like the Ulefone Be Touch need.

The phone is new, so is the company… and naturally, they’ll have to offer a good price for the product at least during the initial stages. Which is why, the phone will be on sale for US$140 between May 15 and 21 on Everbuying.com, after which the price will go up (by iterations of US$10 weekly) to US$170 in June. Coupon code EBOU8 can be applied for an additional US$10 discount before 31st May.

We’ll be bringing the review of this phone soon, so stay tuned, and let us know what you think about it so far!

Actually not a bad looking device and it has decent specs.

Yet another phone I can’t use due to no support for WCDMA 850MHz.

850 is tough for Chinese phones, it’s really only used in North and South America.

It’s used in Australia too. It’s commony supported by many cheaper Android phones. But, quite a few of the new models features here have 900MHz and not 850MHz support.

It’s used here in Thailand too but only on one network (DTAC), all the others use either 900 or 2100. But my main point is most of these phones are only made for Asian markets which almost universally use at least 900 or 2100.

Oukitel source confirmed on 12th may that it supports wcdma850. They specifically asked the question of their engineers, I hope they are right.

Dude, go to this site below, then click on Connectivity and put the filter for 850MHz 3G and you will see which devices support it… =)

Thanks for the link. Unfortuantely it seems they often incorrectly list 3G frequencies for a phone that the phone does not actually support.

In any case, I know there are lots of phone with 850MHz support. It just seems that a lot of the recently released phones with a fast processor, don’t support it.

HI Guys! Can you try ASAP to make a video about the P7000? So far I am not impressed about the UI. But need to know your opinion about it.

Is this processor way slower than a MT6732? I mean the phone looks great but 1.3 quad doesn’t sound like much to me. And any guesses on the camera quality?

    • balcobomber25
      May 18, 2015

They are both quad core A53 SoC’s, the real difference (performance ways) would be between the GPU use as the MT6735 uses the Mali-T760 which is more powerful than the Mali-T720 used in the 6732.

    • Lazar Prodanovic
      May 18, 2015

Expect 10~15% worse performance on both fronts (CPU & GPU) compared to MT6732.

For halfe of the price you will get the Elephone G2 with same low power.
Or for alike the same price of the Oukitel you can get the P7000 with around 800 sigle-core and 3800 multi-core in geekbench.
But I think that you know that by yourself before. 🙂

Not sure what the price of either the G2 or P7000 has to do with the 6735 being “damn slow”.

As for the P7000 scoring higher it uses a better SoC it should score higher, which is why it normally costs over $200.

Elephone G2 is MT6732, not MT6735. It also has a low res 4.5″ screen and only 1 GB RAM. And, I have never seen it under US$ 100. The Oukitel U8 is US$ 140. The P7000 is US$ 210 and ~30% faster. In other words, for 50% more money you get 30% more performance. Is it worth it? Well, I guess it depends on what you want it for.

        • MacArthur
          May 18, 2015

Ok, MT6732 is a few percent faster than MT6735 in Geekbench, but still the MT6735 is 30% faster than the Snapdragon 410 (both CPU and graphics).

    • MacArthur
      May 18, 2015

Around 28,000 in AnTuTu ~ 50% faster than MT6582. The MT6752 is ~30% faster than MT6735. If MT 6752 is damn fast, how then can 75% of damn fast be damn slow? Please explain!

Apparently Oukitel = DOOGEE + OUKI. Not sure if that makes – + or – -.

Yeah, I watched a video of the company launch, headed up by Doogee boss… Apple convention it was not! I still have faith, but also ready to write off $140 to experience.

I’ve ordered one, due to be sent out to distributors on 6th June. Cameras are interpolated from 8&2 mp, as you would expect for this price. No led notification light or capacitive button back light. white/gold version will not be available yet, only silver frame.
I’m not a power user or gamer so I think the 6735 chip will be OK for me, looking forward to seeing how it performs!

Probably best to wait for some reviews. I simply decided that it was interesting enough to be my next phone until something really good turns up , perhaps in time for Christmas. 6795 +2k +4gb + retina scanner maybe?!?
