Elephone P7000: Benchmarks, Photos and impressions after a few days

The Elephone P7000 arrived with us on Friday and when I haven’t been drooling all over the LeTV X600 I’ve taken the P7000 for a play, this is what I have learned so far.

Below are my photo findings, benchmarks and impressions of the Elephone P7000, and where possible I have included a few details that other GizChina reviewers have discovered so far too. This isn’t a full review of the Elephone P7000 and it is based on the first build of the P7000 ROM, so whatever issues are mentioned here may no longer be relevent once updates are rolling out.

Elephone P7000 Benchmarks

The Elephone P7000 rocks a 5.5-inch 1920 x 1080 display powered by a 64bit, octacore MT6752 processor and 3GB RAM. Stock Android 5.0 Lollipop ships with the phone, and this is where the weak link is in performance. This early build of the ROM feels fine out of the box, but with time you begin to notice lags, and performance issues.

Benchmarks from my Elephone P7000 are:

As usual I ran these benchmarks back to back to see if the Elephone P7000 would work up a sweat and found that there was a little heat, but far less than other phones but under the same tests and far far less than the Xiaomi Mi4i (even with its latest update). Still I feel there is room for improvement.

Elephone P7000 ROM

As mentioned above the hardware is fine, it is most likely the software which needs optimisation. Speaking of which there are a few issues here too. Miracast is missing from the OS, and Christopher over at GizChina.de has reported that the WIFI signal bar is in accurate, power consumption too high and some applications are unstable.

Again, keep in mind this is based on the ROM that ships with the phone and updates are likely to fix many of these issues.

Elephone P7000 Screen

When getting the phone out of the box be sure to check that your P7000 isn’t in battery saving mode (as some are shipping this way) this will prevent the screen running at full brightness.

In my case I have removed the screen protector and run the display at max brightness. At max it is fine indoors, but struggles outside. At first I thought maybe it was due to me being use to the intense display on the Xiaomi Mi note, but others have also commented on the dull display.

Elephone P7000 Camera

According to the specifications the Elephone P7000 comes with an IMX214 Sony camera able to take photos at 13 mega-pixels. This is the same camera sensor as the Xiaomi Mi Note and the LeTV X600, so what better way to test the camera than a bit of a shootout.

The photos below were all taken at the same time, the weather was overcast so they are all a little dark.

As you can see, the Mi Note and LeTV offered similar performance, with the Xiaomi phone giving more vibrant colours, while the LeTV colours are a little more accurate. In some conditions the Elephone P7000 offers simlar photos, but they tend to be darker or have a red tint to them. I’m not sure if this is an optics issue or again something which can be fixed with updates but we will keep an eye on it.

There is certainly room for improvement and the LeTV and Xiaomi phones show us what the IMX214 is capable of.
