Only a couple of days back did we report about MediaTek’s desire to enter the Chromebook space, and a demo with the first MediaTek powered Chromebook is already online and doing the rounds.
Charbax of ARMdevices.net got his hands on one of these, as you’ll see from the 10-minute video attached here. Worth noting is also the fact that the MediaTek MT8173 is the world’s fastest ARM processor as of now, as claimed be MediaTek. The 64-bit MT8173 is a quad-core SoC which comes with two clusters of processing units; one, a dual-core Cortex A-53, and the other, dual-core Cortex-A72. MediaTek also note that the MT8173 returns a ‘six-fold increase in performance compared to the MT8125’.
Take a look at the MT8173 running the Chrome OS:
Chromebooks have a love-hate relationship with the consumers. Buyers either swear by their handy Chromebooks, or they’re usually found complaining about how the Chromebook lacks functionality on online fora.
It wouldn’t be unfair to say that MediaTek redefined smartphone in the last few years. This step is a rather interesting one taken by the Taiwan fabricator, and one would assume the result would be a radical one.
