The Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition is one of those devices which comes and goes, but the latest news is that it is finally coming and will arrive in Europe at 299 Euros.
From a hardware standpoint there is nothing to choose between the Flyme and Ubuntu Edition Meizu MX4 phones. Both devices have a 5.36-inch FHD display, 16GB memory, 3GB RAM, Mediatek chipset and 20.7 mega-pixel camera from Sony. In theory the device could run both Ubuntu and Flyme and in the past we had heard suggestions that the phone would have a dual-boot option.
Fans of Linux phones in China have been able to buy the MX4 Ubuntu Edition in limited numbers for a few weeks now, but international customers wanting a slice of Ubuntu had to go for the BQ Aquaris and it’s lower specifications.
News today though suggests that the MX4 will head to Europe for 299 Euros and will be available in Gold or Silver. Canonical are also believed to be hoping to release the phone in the U.S also, but no details of this have been mentioned just yet.
UPDATE: The news is now official. European Ubuntu fans will be able to buy the Ubuntu Edition Meizu MX4 but only through invite only. Invites are being dealt out on the Meizu website. The reasoning behined such a launch is unclear, but it could mean Meizu aren’t 100% confident to put the Ubuntu MX4 in to mass production just yet.
