Flagships don’t enjoy the life they did a few years back; from a couple of years to a year, and we’re almost looking at bi-yearly flagships from OEMs now… especially from those that are very keen on making it big (some clearly overdo that *cough* Elephone *cough*).
Meizu’s MX4 was quite a good phone for its time with the MT6595 SoC and decent hardware… so was the MX4 Pro. However for whatever reasons, the MX4 is already looking at their replacement in the MX5, while the MX4 Pro is now discontinued.
The Meizu MX5 was finally announced today, and from what it looks like, its going to be a force to reckon with. The MX5 will have a 5.5-inch 1920 x 1080p Super AMOLED panel (also means that Meizu no more ship with non-standard aspect ratios), and will be powered by the super impressive MediaTek Helio X10 that we also saw on the LeTV Le 1 X600. With the impressive processor, the phone will have 3GB of RAM.
Needless to say, being a 2015 flagship, the MX5 will feature fingerprint security. Meizu seem to have taken cue from Apple and will be integrating their payments system with the fingerprint security feature… it’ll probably be restricted only to China though; time will tell.
The MX5 will also support dual 4G SIMs, both of which will have to be nano SIMs. Meizu also proudly showed off the AnTuTu score that the phone manages — over 53,000 points.
It had been learnt through leaks and rumours previously that the MX5 would have a full metal jacket and will support fast charging (aka mCharge). The MX5 will charge from 0% to 50% in just 30 minutes, and that’s pretty cool considering it’ll have a 3150mAh battery.
The 20.7 mega-pixel rear camera on the MX5 will have a 1/2.3-inch sensor and laser autofocus, which dramatically reduces the time needed to focus on the subject. According to Meizu, the phone will do that in mere 0.2 seconds. On the front the MX5 will ship with a 5 mega-pixel snapper with an f/2.0 aperture.
The Meizu MX5 will weigh 149g which isn’t all that bad considering it has metal all around it. Software under the metal jacket will be Flyme 4.5, i.e., Meizu’s own skin over Android. Additionally, Flyme sources will also be made available on GitHub for developers to add their own tweaks and touches.
Pricing remains the same for the Meizu MX5 as it was with the MX4, no surprise as it is a modest upgrade. The basic 16GB model is just 1799 Yuan, 32GB is 1999 Yuan and the range topper 64GB is 2399 Yuan. Pricing for international customers is likely to follow MX4 pricing, but keep posted for updates.
Are any current MX4 owners planning to make the upgrade to the Meizu MX5, or are the differences too little to warrant the switch?
Indeed. Except is happens to be cheaper and has sdcard support. Hehehe.
3GB RAM. Super AMOLED.
Well, it has Fingerprint sensor, 20,7M camera (gizchina says in their review of mx4, one of the best cameras at this moment) Amoled display and Flyme (personal prefer). So that are 3/4 thing which are better. But the price of the MX5 will probably not be under $350,- , while the LeTv is priced online for aroud $280,-
“(gizchina says in their review of mx4, one of the best cameras at this moment)” at the time of the review maybe, but not compared to the LeTV X600 and Xiaomi Mi Note
Flyme, SD Card, better camera, 3GB Ram and most importantly it’s made by Meizu, a company I trust more than LeTV.
… because of its constant software-updates! 🙂
Kind of hard to describe, it’s very unique lol. It’s kind of like a cross between MIUI and iOS but also completely different. Youtube Flyme OS there are some videos there to show you what it is like.
Flyme Os is useful but fast and dirty developed os. Many people complains about late notification, stuck on multitasking, old version of customized Chrome browser, etc. With my experience, I can say “buy helio x20 model for x10 performance because of bad software optimizations on Flyme Os”
Hmm bomber, LeTV also has 3GB RAM. If i read correctly, mx5 won’t have SD card. Plus, the camera has just more pixels Now, i too, trust more in Meizu than LeTV, even if i got one x600.
Yea I misread somewhere that there was an SD Card. For the camera I wasn’t even referring to the pixels, I was talking about the 6p lens they used in it as well as the laser guided focus.
RMB 1799/1999/2399 for 16/32/64GB.
damn this Soc, the GPU sucks big time, my only chance for a good phone is now the pro version, pls have a better GPU.
That’s complete BS.
The so called high end GPUs throttle hard after 10-15 minutes and perf drops The SoC just can’t use 4-5W of power without getting way hot and slowing down really hard.
High end phones also use 1440p screens and that’s 78% more pixels.
So all in all, if you actually do game, you are better off with this kind of GPU that’s not overdimensioned for marketing purposes. You get better GPU perf on this device than on a Galaxy S6, if you game more than a little bit. And you win on the battery life side of things too.
Here look how hard the Exynos 7420 throttles and everything with 4-5W power consumption throttles like that in a phone,it’s unavoidable http://www.anandtech.com/show/9330/exynos-7420-deep-dive/7
Those big GPUs that go power crazy are good only for folks that game little and are there for marketing because review sites don’t properly test GPU to show folks the real perf.
Do note that Anandtech tests offscreen so the screen res is not factored in in those FPS results but some devices there are 1440p and some 1080p so if you do play more than a little bit you really get better FPS with this SoC on 1080 than with Exynos 7420 or SD810 and 1440p.
