Xiaomi Mi5 specs supposedly leaked

Many people are eagerly awaiting the next phone in Xiaomi’s incredibly successful Mi line of high end devices, with the next device being the Xiaomi Mi5. Recently, someone supposedly leaked the specifications of the upcoming flagship device, though I do have some doubts on the legitimacy of these claims.

The Mi5 will apparently be powered by Qualcomm’s latest and greatest (and possibly hottest) Snapdragon 820 SoC, along with a lovely 4GB of RAM, a choice of 16GB or 64GB internal storage, expandable memory and will run on Android 5.1.1 with MIUI on top. To go with that, the device will have a 16MP rear facing camera, a 6MP front facing camera, a 5.3-inch 2560 x 1440p display,a fingerprint scanner and a 3030mAh battery. If the specs are legit, then the Mi5 would be quite the beast (with a tiny battery). However, there is one thing that make me doubt this leak.

The one glaring issue with these specs is something that anyone with an idea of Xiaomi’s method of operations would instantly notice. The phone has expandable storage. Hugo Barra has stated in the past that high end Xiaomi phones would not come with expandable storage due to some supposed performance issues. This would seem to be a weird choice considering Xiaomi were clear that they didn’t want any microSD cards near their flagships. This could mean either the specs are fake, or Xiaomi is eating their own words and decided to listen to the demands of their customers.

This sounds like the Xiaomi “roadmap” that was “leaked”. I’ll believe it when I see it.

everything sounds legit except for the expandable memory.
it’s simply not gonna happen.
i don’t believe the story about performance,
a flagship with 16GB is an oxymoron by definition.
it’s time to start with 32GB at least

  Am tired of 16gb without sdcard option. It’s really stupid giving the fact that relatively nothing is involved printing 32gb roms.

  Well, features like 4K / 480fps slow-mo video recording or taking photos in RAW is highly dependable of available storage. You can fill 12GB free memory of 16GB smartphone in just 20 minutes and the recording bit-rate is so grate (65Mbps), that can’t use cloud storage even in LTE Advanced networks. So if those features a present, they are unusable in 16GB smartphones with no SD card slot. Also Xiaomi makes entry level and mid-range phones with good value for the money, but recent MI Note series didn’t have that appeal. Adding SD card is adding value – a much needed move if Xiaomi is serious with it’s + $500 smartphone line.

performance issue of microsd is a load of bollock. you can keep all the softwares in internal memory, retain the speed, WHILE having expandable storage for data keeping and backup purpose. it’s not mutually exclusive.

I don’t believe that. Most popular mobile sensor manufacturers like Sony, Samsung and Omnivision doesn’t offer 6MP sensors as well I know. I guess they can made custom ones for big customers like Xiaomi at demand, but except Apple and maybe Nokia, phone vendors usually stick with stock sensors.
Other than that, I don’t think SD820 will be ready that soon.
Moreover, I don’t want to believe that. Regardless of that rumor they should not made high-end smartphones with 16GB storage anymore.
If a phone has not SD card slot its manufacturer’s main concern is making more money, not performance. It’s what Apple doing and after S6 what Samsung doing. It’s understandable, but 16GB isn’t acceptable for high-end devices anymore at 2015 IMO.
They could find other ways to make attractive their higher models.

  Maybe they don’t want to pay SD slot patents? It’s so strange to see so many Xiaomi phones without SD slot and with 16gb and a lot of white phones more than the black ones :/

    Xiaomi sells $80 phones (Redmi 2A) with SD card slot.
    Cost of 64GB flash should costs approximately $20 more than 16GB units. For example they were selling 64GB Mi4 (at launch) $80 more expensive than 16GB model. So they makes $60 more profit per unit.
    If they put in it SD card some of people would get 16GB model and put in it their MicroSD cards.
    Also if I’m not wrong they have their own cloud services.
    Mi4i doesn’t have a higher model, but they presented it as a flagship (despite the fact it isn’t) and with a SD card slot, it would hurt Mi4’s sells IMO.

      Yea I don’t really get why so many companies are sticking with the 810 despite the negative press. The only thing I can come up with is they are getting some type of kickbacks from Qualcomm.

      I don’t blame OPO either and I have been one of their biggest critics. I think the whole ordeal with India and Micromax was a shady move on CM’s part and that was essentially the nail in the coffin of that relationship.

      I made that same comment a few weeks ago, one of the CM fanboys called me an OPO fanboys, it was quite funny to read actually. Me who has never said a positive thing about OPO being called one of their fanboys.
      I think CM and OPO both used each other. It was very very shady the way the India fiasco went down.
