Meizu’s flagship MX5 was released only earlier this week, but now it’s already available for international pre-order online. The device is being sold by online retailer Gearbest, and will hopefully be shipped out on the first day of August.
The MX5 is Meizu’s latest flagship device, and is powered by MediaTek’s Helio X10 processor. It also has 3GB of RAM, a 5.5-inch 1920 x 1080p Super AMOLED display, a 3150mAh battery, as well as a fingerprint scanner and support for dual nano sim cards. The version of the device on pre-order is the 16GB version of the device, with all colour options available. The pricing for the device is rather steep however at a massive $398, a whole $108 more expensive than the device’s original price.
Gizchina News of the week
The markup on the device is huge, though if you do pick one up, there is free shipping available. What do you think about this increase in price? Is it still worth it to get the device when there are similar devices at lower prices? Tell us in the comments.
IMO those in the US could get the LG G Flex 2 for $349.99 with 1 year warranty which seems like a better deal.

My thoughts exactly.
Anything with a sanpdragon 810 even the v2 version is a waste of money. the throttling and overheating is terrible unless u wont play any games on it at all. Waste of money
Ur argument is only valid if you are into hours of gaming with intensive resource requirement. Dude, have you tested this device for like a couple days? Or did you just based on what someone else said or what you read online? I ever heard a G3 user (who has both devices) claiming after G Flex 2 firmware update, the G3 is actually more hot than the G flex 2 and also read someone commenting in a local forum. You have any idea how much it cost (and trouble) to send a device back to China and then MAYBE in a few months they send it back. Your ROI is already much lower IF the MX5 were to breakdown. G Flex 2 had been in the market for like a few months and had lots of online reviews. Most review did mentioned it being a bit hot, but the design helps. Overheating doesn’t seems to be much issue in most reviews. The main concern is the LG GUI and battery life. So have you used (or even tried) a MX5 to be endorsing that it’s worth US$398 and that you aren’t a fool to pay US$108 (I believe this is exclude tax depending where you are) more than the China locals?
Ive owned the Mx4 and i own an MX4 pro and i have not broken any of them so far but actually i owned a UMI zero at one point as well and dropped it, cracked the screen. Shipped back to geekbuying via registered mail which took 2 weeks before they confirmed that they had received it. They repaired it for 40$USD and mailed it back for free via EMS for free and i got it back in about a week and a half. I own the HTC one M9 as well which I bought specifically to test out the snapdragon 810 and as most every review will tell you, most companies went through a lot of painstaking optimizations to try to fix the heating and throttling issues and it still overheats which is why LG opted for the Snapgragon 808 in the LG G4 and as for you comment on the snapdragon 810 not being good only if im planning on gaming for hours lol, you need to do way more research b4 you post such nonsense. Go buy an 810 phone first then use it and then you can chime in on how hot it gets after 10 mins not hours playing modern combat or anything with similar graphics. In-fact it overheats with games that it really shouldn’t be doing that with. Xiaomi even had to send over about 10 of their own engineers while building the Mi4 Pro for the v2.1 SOC and it still overheats like hell and throttles. I know because my little brother bought one from geek buying. Any phones fixes for snapdragon 810 phones require throttling and bottle-necking the whole thing which is stupid. If rumors are true and the MX Pro comes with the Exynos 7 Octa then ill gladly throw my moey at them, but the Helio X10 is jsut better than the SD 810, simply because qualcomm rushed that chip to try to bring a 64bitchip to market because they felt emasculated by apples A8.The best part about the whole thing is that Geekbuying shipped both the MX4, Mx4 Pro to me very low values like $35 bucks and since its a Chinese phone they dont bother me at with import tax. All you gotta do is ask em to do it via chat and viola.
What does MX4 got to do with MX5? It’s just like saying I have LG G Flex and it works well so LG G Flex 2 should not have any issues also. Also like saying oneplus one is a great success, so oneplus two using 810 v2.1 will be a great success also. Dude, the fact that you have not used a MX5 doesn’t mean you can endorsed saying it’s worth paying that much. Even if you says it’s worth paying that much, doesn’t means everyone else can’t have their own opinion. So you tried HTC one M9 but you never tried the LG G Flex 2? Meaning your real life experience with 810 v2 is only with the M9. The rest is just read up from here and there. Even the v2.1 causing Xiaomi problem, doesn’t mean it’ll be causing Oneplus two team as much problems. Also from your comment if anything happens you need send back China, it takes at least 3.5weeks (From where I am only need 2 weeks max) with a registered mail charge. With most countries, it’s always much cheaper for China to send EMS. Also that’s your experience with one of the 3rd party resellers (you may find others reporting differently) and not directly from Meizu who just want to earn US$108 more from international buyers and have yet proven they can give international service standard. From the rate global phones are moving this year, we are looking at a new flagship phone every 6-8months. Meizu is known to cut price (15-20%) for their flagship repeatedly every few months. Your ROI for buying it at release and missing 3.5weeks of usage will be real bad. You also openly said Geekbuying false claim the item value when you requested, so you don’t need to pay tax in black and white. Smart move 🙂 As the Chinese said 有图有真相 😉 Oh yah FYI I do have a LG G Flex 2, and no I don’t play graphics intensive games as I don’t use my phone for such. With 5.1.1 the phone is much better, I never have an issue with it being too hot compared to the 800 or 801 or MTK phones I have. It’s a nice phone and at the price of US$349.99 (I got it even cheaper) with local warranty, IMO is a better deal than Meizu offering of US$398. Also I’m not saying MX5 is bad, but to me no SD expansion and want sell 16GB for US$398, there are better deals out there. Mind you unlike 3rd party resellers who provide extra services (and risks) to International buyers, Meizu asking price to buy direct from them is just ridiculous.
But its kinda unfair to compare them to LG and Samsung with huge markets that have better importing deals in place so they can import phones to they US far cheaper by bulk because they are far larger but for people that live in China and Asia they can get the phone for 290USD. So what you are saying doenst really make sense since on a site like geekbuying they sell motorola phones at about 600USD which is way too high but its beacuse they have to import them in small amounts so tehy pay a high premium and becasue its a well known brand they cant escape the taxes and import duty. Oh and BTW most any chinese reseller will declare phone or any devices you buy from them at about 35-25$ if you ask, I have done it with gearbest, geekbuying and pandawill and they always comply. those are the only trustworthy sites i have found and i have tried em all but i strongly prefer geek-buying for their fast cheap shipping. The phone i sent them back for repair was 1 year old btw and they still got it fixed and shipped back to me despite the huge distance in a fairly short period of time all things considered and for a decent price. They even rooted it for me upon request. So my entire point being that you need to tanke into consideration that its a much smaller up and coming Chinese comapny and they afford to ship small amounts of phones internationally without taking a massice hit but one day tehy may be the next huawei and have that kind of economic pull and have their own stores in the US so until then well need to pay the premium. The helio X10 is also really good and it matches the SD810 in antutu scores, albeit the graphics inst as good but the heat management so far is good on similar phones with the X10 like the LeTV1 which is another great phone if you want basically the same specs as the Meziu but with a plastic finish. I really love FLYME though which is the main reason i like the phone, i just think its the best looking iteration of android out there and it hasn’t given me any trouble whatsoever in my old MX4 nor my MX4 Pro. If you wait a month or 2 the prices will definitely drop a lot esp since the MX5 Pro is around the corner. I also know their are a lot of flagship phones popping up but the only phones this year im even bothering to look at from china as always are anything made by Meizu, Xiaomi, huawei(Huawei P8 & P8 max) and even LeTV now has entered the competition. All others are cheap trash that keep pumping out new elephones and doogees and mlais and whatever ever day.
So an established company with local support and known to sell products at brand prices gave you an opportunity to buy at cheaper prices is unfair? How’s that not a better deal compared to a newly launched phone with little review (yes the China side has some review on MX5 already) and no warranty and at higher prices and will be cheap a few months down. You do know this article is about “The markup on the device is huge, though if you do pick one up, there is free shipping available. What do you think about this increase in price? Is it still worth it to get the device when there are similar devices at lower prices? Tell us in the comments.” LG G Flex 2 is just an example I used to say there are better deals out there. You just got over excited wanting to tell the world your opinion of 810 and your experience with resellers, which had really not much to do with the original article. Your smart move of saying resellers making false claim of product value isn’t helpful really. It may do more harm to them if every tom dick and harry keeps telling the world they do this. Have you ever think about that? Have you ever had your package hold by the China customs for over 2 weeks cause every now and then (normally around their National day) they’ll do detail checks on all packages? Have you ever have have items lost in post and the insurance you could claim back is just what u have declared? All these are risks, and on top of that you want me pay US$108 more? I know cos I have at least 3 forward packages from China every month for the past 3+ years. 🙂 FYI Meizu is not a small company, they have the resources to setup a support office in US if they really want to. Their 2014 validation is US$6B IIRC. All those cheap trash you claim are the ones that’s keeping the main China brands in check in term of prices. Likely if you talk to those Apple or Samsung fans, they’ll tell you Meizu, Huawei or whatever China brand are all cheap trash. lol A lot of International China phone users gotten their attention of China phone because of these cheap, good value phones. Most phones don’t last us 1 year before they are outdated, and these so call trash to you gives those who aren’t willing to spend too much on phone an alternative to keep their phone updated. Anyway one man’s junk another man’s treasure. 🙂
Since I had a little free time, I just tested 10mins of mortal kombat x on LG G Flex 2 (Snapdragon 810 v2) with 5.0.1 10d firmware (yes I even revert back to the less stable firmware from 5.1.1). It’s as hot as I would play tsum tsum for 10mins on my old padfone2 (Snapdragon S4 Pro) or slightly warmer than playing 10min playing tsum tsum on my Xperia Z ultra (Snapdragon 800). No lag in that 10mins of testing mortal kombat x. Taking that tsum tsum require less resources and now is about 31C (87.8F), I say LG did a pretty decent job trying to keep the temperature down. If oneplus two also uses 810 v2.1, I’m pretty sure they’ll do a decent job. But that needs to be proven.
I know the SD 820 should be a beast and they wont be rushing this time around and will have the heat management under control. they just dropped the ball for a minute because they were getting comfortable on their high horse until apple dropped that A8 bomb.
