Selling devices at near-cost with not a lot of profit from other media means OnePlus has to get rid of dead stock as soon as possible. Now that the second generation phone from OnePlus is due, that becomes all the more important.
In India, the OnePlus One will be sold in unboxed and refurbished avatars for a reduced price of 12,999 INR or US$205. The phone will be sold via Overkart.com, and guess what, people who want to buy unboxed/refurbished units of the OnePlus One will have to register prior to the sale.

Safe to buy?
Generally refurbished phones from the larger manufacturers are safe to buy, a lot had no defects at all or minor and were returned by customers for various reasons
Yes, agreed. Refurbished phones are generally cosmetically new (with new housing) and tested and usually updated with the latest firmware. This was what refurbished units were when I used to work for Motorola.
