Everyone’s having sub-brands these days. Huawei has Honor, Xiaomi has Redmi (which is more a franchise than a sub-brand), Micromax has Yu, and the list goes on.
The newest company to join this list of sub-brand bearers is China’s own Elephone. Elephone might not be as big as some other sub-brands themselves, but there’s no denying that Elephone does have ambitions unmatched by other companies (they go too far at times. yes).
The new Elephone sub-brand will be called ‘Trunk’. More than a sub-brand per se, Trunk will be a lineup of affordable phones. The first smartphone under the Elephone Trunk lineup will have a 5-inch display, a Snapdragon CPU (unknown model), will run Android 5.0 Lollipop, and — like we’ve seen with devices such as the Xiaomi Mi 4i, Meizu m2 note — will have multiple color options available.
There’s no word on when the phones under the Elephone Trunk line will be made available, but given Elephone’s track record, that shouldn’t be too far away.
There’s no two ways about sub-brands for now — they’re the in thing. However, with the ‘usual’ phones from companies like Elephone already being mostly from the affordable category, what would you expect from the new sub-brand? Better build? Better software support? Or just a very cheap price?
