Borderless Xiaomi Mi5 prototype spy photo

As the year draws on, Xiaomi fans are turning their attention to the upcoming Xiaomi Mi5 launch and what it may hold. Perhaps this spy photo is the first hint as what to expect?

Xiaomi already launched a flagship product this year with the unveiling of the Xiaomi Mi Note and Mi Note Pro. These 5.7-inch phablets showed the world that the Chinese phone maker can also be looked upon for impeccable build and design.

The Mi Note might currently sit at the top of the Xiaomi line up, but it isn’t part of the product range that made Xiaomi the hit success that it is. For that we need to look at the Mi range and the launch of the Xiaomi Mi5.

The Mi5 will replace the Mi4 and will no doubt undercut the competition at the low-price of just 1999 Yuan, just as the Mi1 through Mi4 have been offered at. Those in the know claim the Mi5 will come with a 5-inch 2K display, 4GB RAM and Snapdragon 810 chipset. With those specs it sounds like the Mi5 could feature the same hardware as the OnePlus 2 but in a smaller form factor.

Leaked photos claim to show the Xiaomi Mi5 in the flesh with dual speaker in the base, and bezel’s screen design that could make the 5-inch phone seriously compact. If the images are to be believed then the Mi5 might feature either a USB Type C or standard USB plug in the top along with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

If Xiaomi do hope to do battle with OnePlus this year then we should also expect a battery of at least 3300mAh and PDAF on the rear camera for super fast focus. Which company is going to have the true 2016 flagship killer? Let’s wait and see.

This picture has been circulating since January and has been linked to everything from the a new Mi4 to the next Note. I put little faith in this being anything more than a typical Xiaomi “leak”.

    They don’t have a choice? I guess all the following processors aren’t/won’t be available to Xiaomi?
    Helios X10
    Snapdragon 808/805
    Exynos 7420
    Exynos 7580
    Kirin 940
    Kirin 950
    Helios X20
    Snapdragon 820
    There are plenty of choices for flagship SoC’s that have been and will be released this year from every company. All of them are better than 810. It’s not that they don’t have a choice, it’s that Qualcomm has worked out deals with all these companies and is offering them some kind of incentive to use the 810.

      Much of that are not out yet or are not mainstream leading to optimizations issues.
      No coincidence several manufactures are continuing to insist on using 810 despite the well known issues with it. They have no other choice if they plan to release the phone 3rd quarter.

        They have plenty of choices they just choose not too. The only ones listed above that aren’t out are the Exynos 7580, Helios X20 and Snapdragon 820. Every other SoC on that list is available.
        The reason several manufacturers continue to use the 810 is backhand deals with Qualcomm. Most likely they are getting kickbacks in exchange for still using that. The same reason so many companies are still using the 615 which suffers from the same issues.

      they might all fit a Xiaomi phone but i don’t think many of them are a viable option.
      Mediatek has been a partner with Xiaomi already until something happened. I don’t know what was about but i have a feeling they won’t come back anytime soon.
      I’ve heard that, besides their huge sales,Huawei might have some logistic issues to supply for Xiaomi.
      Samsung already sold their SoC to other companies (Meizu) so i don’t see any technical issue, but then it would be game over with Qualcomm and they still need them if they want to expand to the west.
      SD805 doesn’t look a viable option because a 32 bit SoC in the era of 64 bit might not be a good marketing move and also because it was available back in time when the MI4 came out.
      Despite that they still used the SD801.
      I can’t picture any issue with SD808.
      SD820 could be a candidate if Qualcomm’s and Xiaomi’s deadlines match somehow.
      I don’t know anything more than public knowledge, that was just my opinion and for that reason:
      my prediction is SD810
      what i want(and still hope): SD820

        My prediction is SD810 too but for different reasons. Samsung and Mediatek are the most likely for who a company as big as Xiaomi could use. Although Hisilicon is one of the largest chip makers in China, they have the production capacity but would Huaweii sell them to Xiaomi? A deal with Samsung or Mediatek wouldn’t be the end of their deal with Quaclomm as Xiaomi is one of the Qualcomms biggest customers and will still use them for other devices once they figure out how to do 64 bit without overheating.

  they might have a deal with Qualcomm so they can’t use Mediatek, Intel, Hisilicon, Samsung.
  SD810 is the last SoC, the SD820 is not out yet, the SD805 is outdated.
  This is a leak though, i honestly think they will come out with the SD820 or SD808

    I wish more companies would use Samsung and Hisilicon chips. Samsung makes the best overall chips available, the 7420 is truly unmatched for a flagship device.

      comparing to Samsung other companies are like an year later (at least).
      i believe into Mediatek’s potentials.
      i would like to see them focusing on just 3 SoC per year:
      a true budget, a true mid and a true flagship one and improve their logistics.
      I’m afraid that the Helio X10 will see only few devices like the old MT6595.

        Yea but I can say in 2 days of mixed use the Helios has handled everything I have thrown at it with no slowing down and no getting hot. It may not show in benchmarks but in real world usage is it incredibly fast. I am not a gamer (on phones I have a PS4/Xbox for that). But I downloaded the top games (Asphalt, Dead Trigger etc) and didn’t have any issues playing any of them on high settings.

Here are similar pictures that were “leaked” out in November. I have seen about 5 different variations of this same picture. I believe about 1 out of every 100 Xiaomi leaks I see.

Don’t forget that Xiaomi Mi Note Pro is the only one phone without overheat issues and without throttling. Xiaomi has registered 5 patents to avoid overheating. (sorry for my poor english)

I think my phone of choice for this time next year will be between the Xiaomi Mi5 & the 2nd generation Nexus 5. Lets see who makes the better device – Xiaomi or LG ?

  I am one of Xiaomi’s biggest fans but right now I would say LG. LG is not afraid to use a lower spec SoC if it means it will be problem free. When they announced they were using the 808 instead of the 810 there was a lot of heat (no pun intended) from the media. Many months later the G4 with the 808 is outperforming every phone with the 810. And companies still insist on using the 810.

    This time next month i’ll be buying a Xiaomi Mi3, and using it until June – July next year. Should be good. Then we shall see either 2nd Nexus 5 or Mi5, that will then take me January 2018 and perhaps a OnePlus 4.

        It all depends what SoC they use. The MX5 already matches as it for that price point.

SD810 in such a compact case? Not the best idea imho. Unless they’ve invented some super advanced cooling solution.

I hope it will not be like this, too much similar phones, LeTV, Honor, and lots of other Chinese brands are using this design…please Xiaomi, do not!

I’m just about to change my trusty old Mi2 32GB to a Mi4 64GB. Based on what I heard about the S810 CPU (and it’s heat issues), I think it’s best to avoid devices with that CPU for now, so even if this is the Mi5, I’d still choose the Mi4.
