Tronsmart Ara X5 coming August; Windows 10, Cherry Trail in tow

Tronsmart makes some of the most dev-friendly and therefore some of the most popular mini PCs in China. It’s next is going to be the Ara X5, which will come next month.

The Tronsmart Ara X5 will not only have the latest version of desktop Windows in Windows 10, but it’ll also come with the Intel Atom x5 Cherry Trail processor. A tonne of mini and micro PCs that came this year featured Intel’s Bay Trail processors and either Windows 8 or 8.1, so the Ara X5 should be a welcome change.

Along with the Intel Atom x5-Z8300 processor, the Ara X5 will have 2GB of RAM, 32GB of ROM and 2.4GHz/5GHz WiFi. I/O ports include 1x USB 3.0 port, 2x USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet, HDMI out and of course a 3.5mm headset port.

There’s no word on the pricing of the Tronsmart Ara X5, but assuming it’ll have a newer-gen processor compared to existing products, expect this one to cost around US$130 when it finally comes out next month.

Have you ever owned a mini PC, and what’s your take on Android vs. Windows for these?

I’d happily pay $150-160 for 4 GB of LPDDR3 RAM. I bought a bay trail mini pc (pipo x7) and works just great but more ram would be more than welcome.

It will be nice to see if Microsoft have created a leaner operating system with windows 10.
if they have and it makes these boxes run even better they could start to grab mire market share, replacing desktop pc’s for those that do not need to run processor intensive games and applications.

Android has an actual interface built for the television, and runs on ARM which is just as fast while being cheaper and running cooler. So I guess I just dont see the point, the days of Microsofts software dominance are largely over.

In fact Android is also getting a ton of lightweight controller enabled games as well these days, making it even more suitable for the television.
