The Huawei Mate 7 really marked a turning point for the Huawei range in terms of style and build. A new Mate 8 will have a hard act to follow, so what have Huawei come up with?
We love to see spy photos, especially when they show the replacement of a phone that did rather well in the market. Although I never owned one, the Huawei Mate 7 was one of my personal favorite phablets of last year. Sure it was a big device, but it was also beautifully made and looked stunning in the flesh.
Its been around a year since the Mate 7 launched and we have seen design and hardware aspects of the flagship phablet trickle down in to the Honor range of phones, what we need now is the Huawei Mate 8.
Luckily we have some spy photos to browse over that show a phablet that very well could be the Huawei Mate 8. Interestingly the Mate 8 seems physically identical to the Mate 7 with a gold finish, and rear fingerprint scanner, but the front seems to have much narrower screen bezels.
Gizchina News of the week
The spy sample it labeled up with generic branding, a trick we ave seen Huawei use in the past, and according to those with some hands on knowledge of the phone will ship with a 6-inch 2K display, 20.7 mega-pixel main camera and Kirin 950 chipset.
Pricing is expected to remain quite high for the premium device, and a launch earlier in September, possibly the 2nd of the month, is the time we might officially see the phone.
What do you think of 6-inch+ phones? Do you think we will see more of them as bezels shrink or is 5.5-inch more than enough?

Nice touch, that reminder on the back we are dealing with a mobile phone here.

5.5″ is generally too big for me, actually any phone bigger than 150mm no longer fits down my pocket. I’d consider a 5.5″ phone if they can keep it below or around 145mm. Some come close like the LeTV X600 which has a size I might get comfortable with. I don’t see 6″ phones shrink below 150mm any time soon though and I don’t see myself reliving my youth by wearing baggy pants again just to be able to carry my phone with me :).
I never carried a phone in my pants. No matter what size I find it uncomfortable and unsafe for the phone. Not to mention if I really have to take some microwave radiation I will keep that thing as far from my balls as possible. I always carry it in my front shirt pocket or if I am not wearing a shirt then in my jacket’s inside pocket. I ran into some shirt pocket size issues though with a 5.5 Redmi Note so I had my shirts modified with bigger pockets just enough to fit my phone and an eventual 6 inch upgrade when narrow bezel 6 inchers will become available.
Well, most of my shirts don’t have a front pocket and the ones that do don’t fit a 5.5″ phone. I’ve been carrying my Desire HD in my pants’ front pocket for nearly 5 years now and it still looks brand new. Must admit it sits in a pouch for extra protection and I always face the screen inwards (towards my leg) after my previous phone cracked its screen when walking out of a store and hitting a bench :).
I remember the good old days of feature phones, at least around here everybody had carrying cases strapped to their belts. I had a leather case/pouch so tough it was almost bullet proof 🙂 and it had a big metal hinge to lock it with. Not like those phones wouldn’t easily survive falls from a story or two high but with these hardened leather cases there was no way something could break. In fact I still have somewhere a functional Nokia 1100 and a functional Motorola v2288 with the plastic keypad halfway disintegrated and at one point we’ve even played football with those phones.
