Zopo are finally learning (the hard way) what customers want and deserve. After finally releasing a couple of new flagships, the company have now teased their plans to open source codes and have new ROMs developed.
Back in the early days of GizChina, Zopo were the only Chinese phone maker who had any interest in producing phones for international customers. While the rest of the brands worked on saturating the domestic market, Zopo worked on making a killing internationally.
They did well for the first few years, but things start to fall apart as competition heated and customers demanded more for their money (hardware, quality and customer service). It cost Zopo their lead but they are hoping to make it back.
Recently the phone maker released the Zopo Speed 7 and Speed 7 Plus. A couple of phones packing 64bit Mediatek chips, 3GB RAM and either a 5 or 5.5-inch display depending on which you opt for.
Gizchina News of the week
Zopo’s own custom ROM ships with the Speed 7 phones, but in the near future we might see a few more interesting ROMs surface on their phones. Apparently Zopo are woking with an internationally renowned team of developers who will work on custom ROMS for the phones.
The details we received told that developers will be working on ROMs like MIUI, Cyanogemnod and OxygenOS. It’s not clear if these are examples of the types of ROMS we are going to see on the Zopo Speed 7 series or if the company are simply saying they are aiming for the same type of OS with better updates and support.
We’ll keep an eye on this and other Zopo news, in the meantime we ask if any GizChina readers have tried the latest Zopo phones? What do you think of them?
Good news.
if you can’t invest money on developing your own ROM like MIUI,Flyme… then that’s the way to go.
make a porting of the major roms for your phone,
build a tool for easy install, unlock bootloader, and if possible release the code.
i would be OK paying a little more and get a phone like this rather than saving few bucks and get stuck with a phone with a crappy rom and no chance to change it.
I’ve seen companies releasing the code and start selling like crazy because developers start working on those devices.
Zopo has too much offerings. Very confusing for customers. They need to discontinue some older lines and concentrated on three phones, a flagship high spec phone, a middle of the road quality spec good price phone, and a budget phone that still cuts the mustard.
it appears that is what they are attempting to do with the Speed 7. This is a new product for them and hopefully moves them away from the “ZP random number” naming they had before.
I believe they have lost a lot of loyal customers who bought the ZP999/3X. I almost bought the phone too. But I decided that I will get it once they release a Lollipop ROM for the phone, because I already had the experience with very bad SW support from Zopo. And they have not released the Lollipop ROM until now and they never will. A lot of customers are probably very disappointed.
If they release the Speed 7 with good ROM as base, release the source code for the ROM and the phone will not have any serious problems, I might get it. But there are other significantly cheeper phones with similar specifications like Doogee F3 PRO or Blackview Omega PRO. I’m also considering some more expensive phones like Lenovo VibeShot, Vibe X3 or even Motorola X Play.
I would prefer companies like this not to release a Lollipop ROM especially if they have a bad history of not updating the ROM. Lollipop needs a lot of work from the companies end to get it working correctly on their devices.
I would agree bought a zp998 and the Rom support very poor. Big delay in release and serious bugs never resolved. Very dubious about zopo. I will not buy again until at least 3 phone with great, market leading software support are released.
Zopo, look at uni rootjoy there is a starting point, do better for a couple of years and I might return
Zoppo used to be a great company but that was years ago. Many people who are adamant to get 5.0 , don’t realize it means nothing if it is not supported. Every phone to use 5.0 has needed at least one (most more) update to fix crippling problems.
I can confirm that. There is a 5.0 ROM for my Dooge DG700 but I had to go back to KitKat. Of course I meant a correctly working and up to date Lollipop ROM.
