After impressing one and all with their smartphone launches this season, LeTV has moved on to one of the hottest markets — Virtual Reality.
LeTV announced their ‘Super Goggle’ VR headset in China earlier today. The VR headset is probably one of the most powerful around, with features such as myopia correction and more. Myopia correction means that people prescribed correction glasses don’t need to wear contact lenses when using the VR headset.
The visuals appear to be as if coming from a 2K display thanks to the module LeTV use for the headset. According to the Chinese company, it comes from none other than Sharp.
The Super Goggle set also does 3D video, which should be something pretty exciting to try out.
Gizchina News of the week
September 19th is when the Super Goggle will be made available for purchase. LeTV being a content-first company will also release pricing details for a subscription package especially tailored for the VR headset in the coming few days.
I’ve only tried the OnePlus VR headset so far, and its safe to say I was as excited as a 2 year old seeing a remote controlled car for the first time. Any VR enthusiasts here? What would you be happy to pay for a product like this?
If anyone wants a taste of VR, then go to your local Samsung store and demo the Gear VR (even if you don’t like the Samsung brand), especially the Oculus Cinema app. I have a higher-end plastic Cardboard VR headset and it’s not even in the same league as the Gear VR.
I reckon what makes the Gear VR the best consumer VR headset at the moment are (1) good optics, (2) dedicated built-in sensors for better head tracking, (3) optimized hardware tuning since it only works with one phone (no need to fine-tune Cardboard profile parameters), and (4) the Galaxy S6’s superior Super AMOLED display with 577 dpi. I was never into Samsung, but after trying on the Gear VR for 20 minutes I don’t think I can ever go back to a Cardboard-based headset again — it’s that good.
If the LeTV headset turns out to be another Cardboard empty plastic box with no dedicated VR hardware, then I wouldn’t buy it for any amount of money. Save up for the Oculus Rift instead since the Gear VR is a good hint of what the experience will be like.
