More than 30 Snapdragon 820 devices in the works

This year hasn’t been a very pleasant one for Qualcomm, with their lacklustre showings in the Snapdragon 810 and 615. Thankfully for them, the future does seem brighter, or at least it seems so from the words of Qualcomm China’s Frank Meng.

According to a Chinese report, Meng seems to be pretty optimistic about the company’s upcoming processor, the Snapdragon 820, which already has more than 30 phones being planned, designed and built around it. This definitely seems like promising news for the company and could give them the boost they need to get back in the game.

The Snapdragon 820 will be powered by Qualcomm’s own brand new custom 64-bit Kryo CPU. It will be tightly integrated with the Adreno 530 GPU, as well as the Hexagon 680 DSP. On top of that, the Kryo chip will be made on the 14 nm FinFET technology and can achieve clock speeds of up to 2.2 GHz. All of this seems quite promising, though only time will tell how well it will perform.

Meng hasn’t stated what companies are involved, but we probably guess a few of them like Samsung, Sony, LG, Xiaomi, LeTV, ZTE, HTC and Oppo. What do you take from this news? Are you looking forward to the new Snapdragon 820? Tell us down below.

I’m looking for SD618 and SD620. The pair could bring some serious power to budget phones like 1000 yuan phablets.
Early benchmark results shows it’s fast as Exynos 7420 CPU wise, faster than SD801 GPU wise.

        To being that powerful it doesn’t need to be custom. Where do you get that notion?

        Based on 615 being junk. I did not realise the 620 used A72. I am sure I read elsewhere it was 8 A53.

Yes this is what vivo are waiting for to power the xplay 5s. I think mediatek have missed their chance to gain some traction in the high end market, unfortunately for us consumers we will have little choice until they (MT) decide to place some importance on their gpu selection. Hate to say it but my next phone will probably be powered by this simply because there’s no viable alternative.

  agree with you, they had a huge opportunity with the sd810 debacle.
  now the problem is that even the mid-range market is at risk with the sd620 coming out.

    I hope so too! Trouble is the X10 they have been touting as a flagship cpu is in reality nothing more than midrange, really should’ve been the mt6752 replacement instead of the mt6753. That would’ve given them the high end with the x20 (if they had released it sooner), thus making the sd810 even less attractive to manufacturers. Think they are going to struggle a little next year if these qualcomm chips are as good as they sound as even their x30 chip is using the same gpu as the x20 and that won’t see the light of day for another 12 months!

      The thing you guys have to realize is a lot of these companies have contracts with Qualcomm and have been doing business with them for years. It wouldn’t have really made a difference when MTK released the X20, there would still be a handful of companies that will always buy Qualcomm chips.

        right, but there are a lot of companies that haven’t too.
        i also don’t think that having a contract with them means that you can’t make a phone with another Soc (look at Xiaomi,HTC or Samsung).
        but whatever the story is, it’s pretty obvious that MTK lost a big opportunity.
        it’s about time though, they are growing fast, they will be fighting over high end devices very soon.

        No one said they aren’t making a phone with another chip. The only thing this tells us is 30 companies will make a SD820 phone nothing more nothing less. This doesn’t mean those companies will exclusively use SD for all their products.

        there were over 30 phones with the SD801 too, much less with the SD810 and we know why.
        the MT6595 was one of the best SoC from MTK but still couldn’t compete with Qualcomm SD801 (speaking of volume of sales)
        they did miss an opportunity this year. If the SD820 turns as good as the premises then there’s no Helio that can make miracles.
        (still speaking of volume of sales).

  Not exactly, a lot of these companies have long standing deals with Qualcomm, and Qualcomm invests in several of them. Mediatek has made excellent ground over the past year and will continue to fill a niche with their SoCs.

MediaTek chips finally start to be good, since the gps started to use the russain satellites like the other chips and the use of big.Little as a must- MediaTek did not release helio x20 as a cheap chip, so MediaTek wants to be a middle company and its ok
