Xiaomi have announced a rather handy feature with the newest version of their MIUI 7 ROM to transfer files between Xiaomi phones.
Uninspiringly called ‘Mi Drop’, the service allows you to share files between Xiaomi devices running the newest ROM (or later). Essentially, Mi Drop uses WiFi direct to transfer files at high speeds. Although there have been apps such as ES File Explorer, Superbeam, etc. that have allowed you to transfer large files fairly quick between phones, this is the first time Xiaomi have natively supported something like this.
Gizchina News of the week
The feature is only available on the developer (i.e., beta) ROM channel for now, but if all goes well folks running the stable version of MIUI can soon expect to have the feature on their Xiaomis.
If you’re on the Global Developer ROM channel, you’ll have to be on MIUI 7 with ROM version 5.9.29. On the other hand, if you’re using a Chinese MIUI 7 Developer ROM, you’ll have to be on version 5.10.8.
Let us know if you’ve managed to get access to the feature, and if you find it good enough to be able to replace your favourite 3rd party WiFi direct file sharing app.
